Mid-America Windmill Museum

Set on 37 acres, this museum includes 42 windmills in various stages of repair.

Reviewed By spikenails - Osprey, Florida

Windmills have a long connection to this area. Greatest concentration of manufacturers of mills at the beginning of the 20th century. They have many to see inside and out. Volunteer on duty on the day of our visit was very well informed and helpful in explaining the many types of windmills and how they work. Very nice attraction to see for those traveling in the area.

Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site

Gene Stratton-Porter is Indiana's most widely read female author. Nearly 100 years ago, her best-selling novels and nature studies were translated into multiple languages and later transformed into movies. Gene's Cabin at Wildflower Woods was her beloved home for several years. The Gene Stratton-Porter State Historic Site in Rome City, part of the Indiana State Museum and Historic Site Corporation, continues Gene's legacy of conservation, life-long learning and enjoying the beauty of the natural world around us. The GSP Site is made up of nearly 150 acres of shoreline, fields, woods and formal gardens. You can take a guided tour of Gene's beloved Cabin at Wildflower Woods or simply stroll the grounds at your leisure. Guided Cabin tours are available April 1 - December 1 but the grounds remain open year-round from dawn until dusk each day.

First time here. Can't wait to return. I took the guided tour and the feeding tour. In between I had over two hours to go back and check out the animals on my own. The entire location is clean, well organized, nice black top walkways...MoreThank you for sharing your experience! We are so pleased you enjoyed it, and even happier you learned some things along the way. - Lori

The WOW factor here is huge! Had no idea as to the extent and depth of displays, autos and information so well presented in the museum. This has been a drive-by destination for years. Finally planned this "drive-by" into our travel schedule, last weekend, for a couple of hours. To do this justice, and the neighboring National Auto & Truck Museum, one could easily use a couple of days.
When we paid our fee for the ACD Museum we got a "Passport" with discounted rates to seven other museums in the immediate area. Needless to say we will be making return visits, with lots more time built into the schedule.

Noble Hawk Golf Links

Reviewed By Denny B - Fort Wayne, Indiana

Got a chance to play this course a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, it is about a 45 minute drive to enjoy this golf course. It was in great shape, and the pace of play was good. Have to consider this a bit of a treat, as it is not as convenient as other choices.

Chain O'Lakes State Park

Reviewed By ccindyk48 - Westville, Indiana

This is a really nice state park. One of the nicest in Indiana. There are several interconnected glacial lakes. This makes for really nice canoeing, kayaking & boating when the water is high. The channels have some logs & debris, but we didn't have a problem until we tried to get to Long Lake. Beavers!
There's fishing, a swim beach, cabins for rent, biking, boat rental. Hiking is great! Any lake you can boat to, you can also hike. The longest hike is 4.4 miles. The hikes rated rugged are really on the high side of moderate.

We camped in the campground & it was nice, but very loud during the day.
Weekends are jump'in & there weren't too many empty sites. We had site 30, which is out of the way & next to Trail 10. There was some foot traffic, but not too bad. Sites are hit or miss. We were lucky to get a site with not too bad of a grade. Some had a really tough incline. There were some muddy ones too with puddles. The area around site 30 looked ok. Restrooms were very nice for a state park & clean. They had showers with good faucets & you could adjust the temperature!!
The camp store was stocked with just about everything. Everyone was nice & polite.
They have a nature center at the beach. There's also a refurbished old time schoolhouse.
I would recommend this one for a visit!

Cook's Bison Ranch

Reviewed By hereandthere053 - Fort Wayne, Indiana

This was an interesting afternoon visit but not worth the money charged. A covered wagon pulled by a tractor takes you out into a field where you are safely able to view the herd and hand-feed the friendlier cows and calves who come up to the wagon. Seeing the bison that close was really neat and watching the bull chase after his chosen cow was even better - the sounds he made and the way he stuck out his great pointy tongue was fascinatingly gross, but hard not to watch. They were all surprisingly large and gave me a great appreciation for the bravery of the native American hunters who rode among the herd on their relatively small horses and primitive hunting tools. The children on the wagon were especially thrilled. There's not much there except the wagon ride, though. Some pricey frozen buffalo and a few souvenirs inside the main building and a monstrous stuffed buffalo head with which to snap a picture or two were about the extent of the offerings.
