Gulgong Holtermann Museum

The Gulgong Holtermann Museum is housed in two State Heritage listed buildings originally photographed in 1872. The Holtermann Collection of photos incorporate Gulgong town and its surrounding areas as well as photographs of Sydney and Melbourne. These UNESCO listed photos have been digitally enhanced by the State Library of NSW and generously shared with our facility. Touch screens installed throughout the museum enables enlargement of these photographs to reveal the smallest details and the walls of the facility are lined with stunning mounted photos.

An amazing museum that is based on 3000 plus photos of Gulgong and surrounds during the gold rush which were found untouched for many years in a house previously owned by a Mr Holterman in North Sydney, NSW. He originally found the largest gold nugget in Gulgong and with this wealth commissioned a photographer to track the gold rush and town history. The restoration of the photos was pivotal in the development and subsequent funding of the Museum with the history and files associated with this time providing a snapshot of what the town was like, the inhabitants and the mix of cultures that arrived to seek their fortune, whilst contributing to the development of the town. The town scenes and individuals have been superimposed on the existing fascias of historic Gulgong buildings. A film presentation shows the laborious process of restoring and colouring of the photos. A wonderful museum to visit and enjoy for all ages. A $10 admission is charged and concessions available for a trip back in time. A wonderful guide was our narrator at the Museum and provided an introduction into this amazing find of photographic history. Best exhibit you will find around the Mudgee/Gulgong and broader regional areas.

Gulgong Gold Experience

Gulgong Gold Experience has been established on Red Hill where gold was first found in 1870. Gulgong's Gold Rush history is well documented and displayed within the facility. Visitors are encouraged to read, watch and listen as they are guided through this unique facility. The story is told by walking through a replica mining tunnel with displays which gives the visitor a feeling of being underground, but not claustrophobic. There is an original mine shaft with a poppet head constructed overhead, a miners cottage and the opportunity to try your hand at gold panning. If you wish to have a little more fun you can purchase a panning activity bag withthe hire of a pan for $5 for the kids. BBQ facility are available for families wishing to enjoy the tranquil parkland atmosphere, especially to break a long trip and let the kids run wild in a safe, natural environment.

We had a wonderful afternoon with the kids gold panning. The staff were friendly and it was well set up. The kids are stoked with their gems and pieces of “gold”. It made a good side trip from Mudgee. I would highly recommend it for young families.
