Festung Tighina

Reviewed By NinaIH - Stavanger, Norway

Built in the 1500s, this is a perfect example of turkish medieval style architecture. You'll need to travel to Transnistia to see this, as Bendery is in Transnistria. You don't need a guide, but its beneficial as there is not much information available on site. There is a small museum with medieval torture devices, and a small museum with displays of items found in the grounds around and in the fortress, as well as a miniature version of the fortress. I'd say this is a mush if you choose to visit Transnistria.

Tighina Military Cemetery

Reviewed By ELear - Ancona, Italy

This cemetery contains the graves of soldiers of many countries - not only this one - who died for their country: Russians, who came in the eighteenth century with Potemkin, Swedes, who came with Charles XII (at the end of the path on the left), French, Germans, Hungarians who died in the Second World War... My driver, a Ukrainian, told me the proper name was the cemetery of "those who died for their country". It is beautifully kept.
In front of the monumental entrance, there stands a magnificent statue of General Potemkin, the lover - some say the husband - of Catherine the Great, who captured Bender fortress from the Ottomans.
(The fortress was also where Charles XII and his remaining men came after the Battle of Poltava. It is now a military barracks, so tourists can't visit. You get a decent view of the walls and roofs from a bridge near Tiraspol.)

Church of the Holy Joachim and Anna

Didn't go inside, but from the outside this white/blue color combinations make it stand out. You can start your Bender walk here, go through the military cemetery, toward Citadel. About 40 min walk.
