Seneca Caverns

Reviewed By Hobartin - Houston, Texas

It wasI who suggested a visit here, having done numerous other public caves in other states. When the entry and all the descents to lower levels proved both difficult and challenging my step daughter opted to go no further. So this is a fracture cave, not the usual type the public gets to enter which are formed by water flow and drips eroding limestone. This was opened by earth rock cracking underground, hence the descent is between places revealed by that movement. While it is very interesting and the guide was pleasant, it is not for anyone who has issues with movement or climbing. Would suggest only those who are relatively fit and without claustrophobia go.

We emailed ahead and made arrangements with Brenda to tour the house. She was very knowledgeable and an interesting guide (and curator). The story of General McPherson is an interesting one and you can tell that she enjoys what she does. Thanks to Brenda for an informative hour!

Mad River Museum

Reviewed By bisonf - Bellevue, Ohio

The volunteers at the Mad River are really building up the museum and it's activities. For Christmas we rode in an old caboose, enjoyed cookies and milk, then took the grandchildren to talk to Santa. This was well worth the price of admission (which I believe was $5/person).

Another fund raiser they had over the winter was "Dinner in the Diner". We were served a delicious meal, wine included, in an old diner car! This has been an annual event. They informed us they had built the funds up for when they can start their next project - restoration of the first Silver Passenger car built. Cost of the material to redo the seats was $40,000.

If you have any interest in trains and history behind the railroad this is the place for you.

Sorrowful Mother Shrine

Reviewed By LifeIsAGift28 - Toronto, Canada

This place has a lot to offer. The Chapel has beautiful stained glass windows. It is also a designated Holy Door during this Year of Mercy (2016). The open side main church is large, so it can hold many pilgrims. So it is only suitable for summer time, since it will be very cold in winter. The grounds was wooded and has different paths with statues and grottos all over the place. The Stations of the Cross is magnificent. You can spend the whole day meditating at different spots. So rich and inspiring. The Gift Shop has a good selection of stuffs, and do not forget to ask for the map/guide to help you navigate through all the places you want to go. But mind the bugs also (we were there in mid August). They provide the insect repellent/bug spray to help protect you from the bugs. Consider to come with a group for pilgrimage to spend a whole day. Lots of places for picnic also.

Historic Lyme Village

Reviewed By Paul S - Marion

Lyme Village (Ohio, not Connecticut if you're googling) is a very well done and interesting historical village/living history museum just off the turnpike on State Route 4. The visitor center has a separate museum of postmarks (letter cancellations with city, state, and date) , restrooms, and a gift shop. You can take a self guided tour or go with a guide for no extra fee. We opted to take the guided tour so we didn't have to wait for an open time to go through the John Wright mansion, and I'm glad we did. Our teen guide was very knowledgeable and friendly and didn't mind that it was just our family on the tour. He gave out trivia and history without talking down to us and let us go through the buildings at our own pace instead of just rushing us through. He also had the keys to the general store and a couple other buildings we couldn't have gone into by ourselves. My wife said this was her favorite of all the historic villages we have visited, so we will probably go back for one of their special events like the Christmas Victorian dInners.

Stop by this 12-acre pond during the late fall or early spring for great waterfowl viewing.

Little kids love to come here to feed the ducks, but as I've aged I don't feel the draw as much. Good memory spot. Grain feeders available.
