Ottawa National Forest

Absolutely loved the trails, waterfalls, and parks in the forest. There are several waterfalls that are 1/8 to 3/4 of a miles from the parking lot. Many include lots of stairs and paths full of tree roots. But go. The walk back through the forest is awe inspiring and magical.

ABR Trails

Skied here over the New Year holiday and was delighted by all the snow and well- groomed trails. I wasn't sure how I would like not having the warming shelter open, but it wasn't really an issue. We just used our car as a warm up shelter. I would recommend ABR for skiing. It was worth the trip for the snow and the well-groomed trails.

Black River Harbor Recreation Area

Reviewed By TAFCRacer - Mechanic Falls, United States

We visited the Black River Harbor Recreational Area of the Ottawa National Forest recently for a family reunion. This recreational area is located 14 miles north of US Route 2 in Bessemer, Michigan. It features boat access to Lake Superior, camping, a large grassy area with charcoal cooking grills, a sandy beach, many hiking trails with scenic overlooks and a large enclosed pavillion (with flush toilets) that can be reserved for events. About 60 of us enjoyed our afternoon at Black River Harbor, using the pavillion facilities. I took a short 1-1/2 mile hike to and from Rainbow Falls and was impressed with the enormous old growth trees in the forest. It was also very cool to hear the people playing in the park fade into silence during the hike, let my mind get lost in the still quiet of the forest, then slowly begin to hear the waterfall as I hiked closer to it. This is a wonderful place to visit & relax, as a solo trip, or with family & friends.

Copper Peak

Copper Peak is the largest artificial ski jump in the world, and the largest ski jump in North America. The 35 degree, 469 foot, cantilevered inrun was constructed using 300 tons of COR-TEN steel in 1969 at a cost of just over $1 million. Today, visitors can ride an 800-foot chairlift and a 18-story elevator to an observation deck, then walk 8 flights to the top of Copper Peak for one of the most stunning views in the Midwest. On a clear day, 3 states and Canada are visible from this amazing vista! Located on the Black River Scenic Byway and just minutes from Lake Superior and majestic waterfalls, Copper Peak is a must-see sight. Visitors in 2020 and beyond will also see renovations occurring at the site, as local supporters are working towards bringing world-class ski flying back to Copper Peak and the United States.

The day was overcast but we went anyway. All I was hoping for was no rain, and we were blessed with no rain. When I saw how the lift to the top of the ski jump hill was practically straight up, I nearly freaked but went on the trip anyway. I was a bit scared. The walk to the elevator was short, I do walk with a cane but I took it slow as your either walking on grass that was uneven or a dirt with small stone, path. The elevator ride was smooth to get to the initial viewing platform. There are small wooden steps then metal grated steps if you want to climb to the top, which we did. Much windier all the way at the top. I wasn’t going to take the additional steps up to the tippy top but figured I was there and probably wouldn’t forgive myself if I didn’t try. I’m glad I did. I really loved the trip. It wasn’t crowded; maybe due to the weather forecast. I don’t know but it was great. It would have been amazing if the sun came out but that isn’t Copper Peak’s fault.
