Gingerbread Cottages

Reviewed By lesandmarsha - Boylston, United States

These cottages are a must-see in Oak Bluffs. All different colors and varying sizes, there are over 300 gingerbread cottages on 36 acres. The cottages are very colorful and ornate and are located in a campground at Trinity Park, close to Circuit Avenue, the main street in Oak Bluffs. Many of the cottages are lived in year round and some only in the summer months. Residents welcome visitors but ask that they be respectful of private property so that the serenity of these private grounds can be maintained. While walking around and looking at the cottages, be sure to visit the Tabernacle, the Centerpiece of the Campground. Religious services, community sings, concerts and many interesting lectures are held there during the busy summer months. The highlight of the summer comes with Grand Illumination Night when hundreds of porches are crammed with lighted lanterns. At that time, thousands of visitors and resiidents of the Campground celebrate old fashioned tradition.

Circuit Avenue

Off-beat and quirky shopping enclave in Oak Bluffs.

Reviewed By py236 - Albany, United States

Circuit Avenue is in the heart of Oak Bluffs once upon a time where African Americans went on vacation because they weren't allowed to be anywhere else. Restaurants, tourist shops and ice cream stores line the street. Every night, people walk up and down the block, gather to talk or sit outside. It's just down the block from the pier, which has a wide range of food and activity offerings. Truly the heart of the town and walking distanxe to the beach and town square.

Martha's Vineyard Camp meeting Association (MVCMA)

We walked down Circuit Ave and took a path leading into the beautiful grassy area of the Martha's Vineyard Camp Meeting Association. It was a quiet restful place by the Tabernacle revival meeting house where concerts are still held, surrounded by beautifully ornate gingerbread cottages from 1867. Each cottage is unique and creatively adorned with color. We also toured the Trinity Methodist Church. A delightful area in Oak Bluffs for a stroll.

On Wednesday evenings at 730 pm you can join an olfashioned sing a long. The third Wednesday in August the Tabernacle is filled (over 1500 people) to start the Illumination of the Campground. A ery unique part of American history

Definitely make it a point to come here and schedule a walk with an alpaca! My husband and I had the opportunity to walk 2 male Alpacas with Tayla and she was so sweet and informative :) The gift shop had so many handmade genuine items made with Alpaca fiber! I bought a winter hat, socks and gloves and they are the most comfortable things ever! So warm! Very reasonable priced! I would recommend this activity for everyone. Young and old

One of the four on the island. Can walk all around, see the bluffs. And late afternoon allows for some beautiful light. Highly recommended.
