Burlington is the center of a micropolitan area including West Burlington, Iowa, and Middletown, Iowa, and Gulfport, Illinois. Burlington is the home of Snake Alley, once labelled the crookedest alley in the world.

Snake Alley

This local landmark was constructed in 1894 to help connect the residential district at the top of the bluff with the commercial district down below. Snake Alley consists of five half-curves, two quarter-curves and drops 58 feet over a distance of 275 feet. High on the bluff of the Mississippi River overlooking Black Hawk Spring and the Mississippi River, the Crapo Park Log Cabin offers a glimpse of the simpler life of early settlers in Iowa. Located in beautiful Crapo Park in the south east corner of Burlington, Iowa, the cabin has been open to the public since 1971. Originally built in 1909, the replica cabin was used as a meeting place for the Hawkeye Natives Association. The Cabin is open to the public 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm Saturday & Sunday from May thru October. There is no admission fee for the Crapo Park Log Cabin.
