Museo Historico de Acapulco Fuerte de San Diego

Acapulco owns a very rich history and we were very happy to discover it by visiting that fortress and its museum. About 10 rooms are dedicated to different ages and aspects of what was the most important port in New Spain. We went 3 times as we wanted to read and learn the most possible!

This is an excellent and informative museum that looks at Acapulco’s historical role in the Spanish trade with the Far East. You could easily spend two hours or more wandering through the many exhibits. Information in Spanish and English. Highly recommended.

Museo Historico Naval de Acapulco

Reviewed By MinnCindy - Saint Paul, United States

We concluded a historical afternoon in Acapulco with a visit to the Naval Museum after visiting the nearby Mask Museum (Casa de Mascaras), and the Acapulco History Museum. The Naval Museum houses amazing maritime artifacts and large replicates of historical ships. Most contain in excess of 30,000 pieces from multiple types of wood. The museum director is a master ship builder and his large replica ship in progress is displayed. Signs and exhibit descriptions are only in Spanish & the director provided a private Spanish language museum tour. Fortunately, our tour guide, Roberto, from Roberto Alarcon Tours, translated the director’s presentation into English and our questions to him into Spanish. The director was very knowledgeable about maritime history & the museum exhibits. He also opened portions of the replica ships to show interior rooms and their furnishings that were exact hand crafted replicas of the original ships as he explained ship sizes, types of woods, cargos, sails, etc. The tiny pieces needed to build interior rooms, room contents, cargo, and the tiny working parts such as anchors and sails helped us understand the complexity of each replica project. The director was passionate in sharing his extensive knowledge of maritime history; replica building and details on museum exhibits. However, without the help of Roberto’s translations, we wouldn't have been able to understand the importance of the exhibits or communicate with the director.

The Mask Museum (Casa de Mascaras) is apparently newly opened within the past year in a new building tucked between El Fuerte de San Diego and the Acapulco Naval History Museum. We easily combined the Mask Museum, Naval History Museum and the Acapulco History Museum In El Fuerte de San Diego in a single excursion. The air-conditioned mask museum is excellent and I highly recommend a visit. There are a wide variety of types of colorful current and historical masks from all regions of Mexico tastefully displayed. When we visited, no signs had yet been posted in either Spanish or English to describe the exhibited masks. However, our tour guide, Roberto, from Roberto Alarcon Tours, was able to explain the history and geographical and cultural significance of all the masks based on his extensive knowledge of masks from the previous Casa de Mascaras (Mask Museum) and general Acapulco history and culture. Roberto made our experience much more educational and meaningful than it otherwise would have been.
