Catania has been a prize of many empires over the centuries, from Greeks to Romans to Arabs to Normans to Spaniards (to name a few). But its citizens have a more dangerous enemy right in their backyard—Mount Etna, Europe's largest and most active volcano, which destroyed the city with earthquakes and lava flows in 1693. Look closely at the baroque buildings dating from after the eruption—you'll notice a creative use of lava.

Palazzo Biscari

The most important private palace in Catania and precious testimony of the Sicilian baroque. The frescoed halls, full of charm and elegance, represent a splendid setting for concerts, meetings, receptions, gala evenings, fashion shows.

MacS, Museo Arte Contemporanea Sicilia

The MacS rise up inside the Little Abbay of the Monastery of S. Benedict, situated in Crociferi Street, site of Unesco and the World Heritage. This historical structure, attribuited for grace of shapes and armonic set of the architect Giovanni Battista Vaccarini is connected to the Great Abbey trough the famous Arch of S.Benedict. In harmony with the beautiful setting that it is placed and with wonderful baroque paintures of the church of S. Benedict, the MacS combines the architectural beauty of the eighteenth century to the modernity of contemporary art. The MacS is in fact the union line that starts from the distant Baroque painting tradition to arrive at contemporary and the aim is the promotion of the cultural heritage of Sicilian heritage, often creating cultural associations with equally prestigious historical and artistic containers , and the promotion of contemporary Italian and international art giving space to young talents and ancients artists .
