Crex Meadows Wildlife Area

Crex Meadows never disappoints! In the fall it is a wonderful place to observe the sandhill crane migration. There are thousands that stop here on their annual migration. You can see them close by the roadways and as they fly in toward sunset and out at sunrise. There are a ton of other birds and wildlife to see as well including swans, geese, beaver, deer, bear and wolves (though bear and wolves are not seen as often as deer!). In the spring there is plenty of bird activity and it is always fun to see the ducklings, goslings, and signets. Would definitely recommend a visit to Crex Meadows if you are a bird or wildlife enthusiast!

We have been to the fort about six times. The historical tours are really good and interesting for both kids and adults. The fort has historical artifacts to view and a really nice gift shop. The wild rice pancake breakfasts that occur on some holiday weekends are delicious and reasonably priced.

St. Croix Casino Hertel Express

We decided to check out the casino restaurant today for lunch. The casino is small but very nicely laid out, bright and cheerful. The restaurant was beautifully decorated with a beautiful wall fireplace. They offered a buffet or menu option. The tables were nicely spaced apart. The waitstaff was friendly and efficient. We both ordered the prime rib sandwich with fires and coleslaw and it was fantastic! The portion was large and the price was low. The menu has a very nice selection of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. I will definitely be returning!

This is our classic stop between Minneapolis and Hayward. The fried cheese curds are to-die-for. The ice cream and froyo selections are wonderful. There is an excellent selection of cheeses and snacks. I am not a fan of their string cheese, but everything else I've tried is delicious. It can definitely get crowded on summer weekends, but it's worth it for the cheese curds and ice cream!

Siren National is a beautifully manicured 19-hole championship golf course located in Northwestern Wisconsin. Built in 2001, Siren National has established itself as a Northwest Wisconsin Destination Course. Mature Pine and Hardwood forests line Bentgrass Fairways and greens offer a rewarding outing to the veteran and beginner golfer alike.

As an avid golfer, one of the things that increases the odds of a good review from me is when a course is well conditioned. For the most part, Siren National is not. The biggest downside for me is the cart paths are all dusty gravel, meaning you're going to clean your bag when you finish. I could have over looked the other issues, but not that.

The clubhouse is a double-wide trailer, with two very nice guys manning the twin cash registers. It is very clean and serves food, lots of alcohol, but almost nothing in the way of golf. A few sleeves of second-rate golf balls, a couple of shirts, and that's it. Wait...they did have a few packages of tees by the cash register.

The greens are bumpy...very bumpy! They are also shaggy...very shaggy. Perhaps we played on a day when didn't mow, but it hadn't rained so not sure why they were long. The fairways were lush, in fact, so lush they seemed out of place for this course.

To sum it up...average track, nice staff, great fairways, bumpy greens and ragged tee boxes. Of course, the price was right, only $35 on a Friday. We were behind a 7-some of ladies, but they did let us play through after nine.
