Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site & Museum

Reviewed By wbullseye - Windermere, Florida

The Chicamaomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site tells the history of the first Life-Saving Station built and staffed in North Carolina. It can be easily missed or forgotten about with all of the other activities and lighthouses found in the Outer Banks. However for those who make the trek here will not regret it. I found it well run and organized and is a highlight of my time in this area. The site is open Monday through Friday from 1000 to 1700 and Saturdays from 1000 to 1600. I would check their website for changes to these times.

There is a $8 charge for adults ($7 for those 65 and above) which is good for a week's worth of visits. This price is more than reasonable and a bargain. Admission lets you into the five building. They could easily charge more for what is offered. There are special events that are also included with the admission, although there were none during my visit.

I would recommend watching the video of the station's history first. It will help you start with an understanding of not only the history, but of the buildings and artifacts you will see on your visit. One of the volunteers provided me a brief history and what to do before I went out on my own. At the top of the main building you will get a good view of the area and get a sense of what the station's crew would have seen when the area was remote and why the location was chosen here.

Each building is decorated to show what it would have looked like in the early days. Throughout you will see old furnishings, life-saving equipment and items from shipwrecks. I would plan to spend up to two hours visiting each site and watching the movie.

I would highly recommend visiting the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Historic Site. Everyone of all ages will enjoy learning a piece of Outer Banks history.

Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge

This bird-lovers' paradise provides a temporary home to more than 250 types of birds.

Not knowing what to expect, we traveled down a narrow spit of land to see what Pea Island was about. The two-lane road wasn't heavily traveled as it may be during the main tourist season. Wind timelessly swept the sand across the sound side to the ocean side and then swept it back. Along the road are man made side paths that lead to views of the water and native birds, the wild flowers and scrappy grasses that survive in the shifting sands. The dunes of the ocean side can require determined climbing through sand to reach the wild ocean. No lifeguards and often few people make swimming risky. In this country the wild places of this kind where it's still possible to have a raw and direct encounter are rare.

Rodanthe Pier

Reviewed By David E - Charleston, South Carolina

This visit to this truly wonderful house, was one of my life long highlights. Members of my family who had reserved the house for a week in March, invited me to join them, which I did for four days. Although the house had subsequently been moved to a new location down the beach, it was still ocean front with nothing but beach and ocean to the east. The structure and the furnishings were pretty much as they were in the movie 'Nights at Rodanthe'. I strongly suggest, if anyone has a chance stay at the Inn, they by all means should do it and there is plenty to do on the Outer Banks.
