American Gothic House

Come to Eldon, Iowa and view the exterior of the house that inspired Grant Wood to paint American Gothic, one of the most recognized paintings in the world. Tour the adjacent American Gothic House Center which showcases Grant Wood's life and the history of the house. Props on hand encourage visitors to pose in front of the historic American Gothic House and create their own unique American Gothic portrait.

We drove an hour out of our way to visit this place and were not disappointed. Very interesting Grant Wood history and an opportunity for a reenactment of the famous painting "American Gothic". We look pretty good in those costumes, too much fun. Couldn't get our 14-year-old to dress up though....

The Market on Main is one of the most exciting new additions to Ottumwa's downtown. Located at the corner of Main and Jefferson streets, the Market in its new life houses artists' and jewelers' booths, locally grown produce, meats, cheeses, and wines. Chief Wapello's Memorial Park

Reviewed By Donna K

Found the memorial site where Chief Wapello of the Sac and Fox tribes is buried. The town is named Agency for the Indian agency that was stationed there. The first Christian Service in the interior of Iowa was held in 1838 in the wigwam of Chief Wapello by a Methodist Circuit Rider Reverend Thomas M. Kirkpatrick. A stone marker is located at the park. It also is the location of the 1842 council between the Chiefs of the Sac and Fox Nation and the US Government representatives for the purchase of much of Iowa that set the stage for the homesteading of Iowa in 1843. The rail road also has a monument placed there along with the graves of General Street and his family. Before his death the Chief requested to be buried by his good friend General Street. The Sac and Fox Nation paid for his grave stone.

Airpower Museum

Wonderful collection of 1920s and 30s airplanes.

I first read about this place in the June 2016 issue of Air & Space mag. They had a large write up on the annual Antique Airplane Fly-in held every Labor Day. Always on the lookout for interesting destinations for motorcycle day trips and this fit the bill. The place is deceptive is a good way. The build is small and on first entering it appears to be a typical cluttered rural building. But once you start to take a closer look you will discover countless interesting historic, flight related items and aircraft you would not expect to find in an out of the way place. Look up the A&S article and take a drive. It worth the time.
