We were limited to a day out as we were on a cruise. Booked through our cruise company and had a great day - just the river cruise alone (approx 1 hr each way) was enjoyable - spotting crocodiles, birds, and just the scenery. Great to see the 'crocodile' outline of the hills from which Lamanai got it's name. The ruins were great - beautiful walk to them - the highest temple was relatively easy to get to the top via well built wooden stairs and then a short climb on the stone steps. The view from the top was breathtaking. Excellent to get info about the ruins from the guide. Expect to spend 1 - 2 hours there. Howler monkeys added to the atmosphere. Glad we went - well worthwhile.

We opted to spend a little more ($30) for our party of 3 for a private tour and are super happy we did. We got out earlier than everyone else and had the river and Lamanai to ourselves for awhile. Incredible people run this tour company and Nate was the best guide ever...SOOO knowledgeable in the Mayan cultural history and the facts around Lamanai! He just kept answering questions, digging deeper with us, and we learned so much and laughed and loved it all! Great lunch too...and we saw SOOO many animals on the river trip! Howler monkeys were everywhere, and you could hear them the entire day!
