Though we did not hike or drive into the valley itself, definitely worth checking out the Waipio Valley Lookout for its breathtaking, million-dollar views. There is an access road down to the valley itself, however only 4WD vehicles are recommended as it is a very steep grade. There may be some people willing to drive you down should you be interested. Otherwise, it is worth stopping to take a few pictures and immerse yourself with the beautiful landscape. Parking is a bit tough to come by on busy days, but you can probably manage to find some on the street. Just be mindful of property driveways and such!

We stopped during a ATV tour to view the falls. Great photo op and also of the black sand beaches. Beautiful falls.

We enjoyed visiting Mauna Kea Tea. It was cool to see the tea in different stages of the growing process, and the teas they let you try are delicious, so I enjoyed that as well.
As another reviewer noted, we didn't really learn as much as we could have on the actual production phase, which would have been interesting. I also would have liked to see production tools, or videos of how it is done.
The tour seemed like it was still a bit in the beginning phases and was a bit more "on the fly" and less structured. The tea tasting though was down to a T, and the owner really gave a lot of thought to the presentation and information about the teas, helping us taste subtle flavors and giving us histories on them.
The tour is a bit pricey so if you aren't a tea lover, this may not be the best tour for you. But if you love green tea, you'll love Mauna Kea Tea's.

We love stopping by this Sunday market after church for a wonderful lunch, great music and to stock up on our produce. They support their community by allowing the public library as well as the local Girl Scout troop to have booths when requested. It is a great place to meet old as well as new friends and to find the hidden treasures of this Hamakua Coast.

Calling all chocolate lovers! Join us at our farm store for a tasting of select chocolates from around the world (including Hawai'i) that we make all on site (no store bought chocolate here!), allowing you to experience how a particular region's climate, soil and terrain affect the taste of the chocolate, "the terroir" as winemakers so famously say. The state of Hawai'i is the only place in the United States where cacao is commercially grown. We'll share the history and chocolate-making process from the tree to bean to bar. Besides the 300 cacao trees you'll see on our 5-acre farm, we also grow nearly forty varieties of exotic fruit on the farm, including 1,200 white pineapple plants, as well as native Hawaiian sugar cane, vanilla orchids, and more! We'll taste whatever is in season. If you're looking for a unique foodie experience, this is a must! Our hours are Friday, Saturday and Sunday by appointment from 10am to noon.

A tasting at Kahi Ola Mau Farm is so much more than a chance to eat delicious chocolate. Mike and Rhonda have quite the operation. As you pull into the property, you will notice the cacao trees and pineapple patch. Ask them to point out the huge avocado tree, as well! When it comes time for the chocolate, there's no stuffiness here. Mike will help you understand what you are tasting and prompt you to notice the differences between the different types of chocolate. And of course, you're bound to find some (or all) of the chocolate delicious, as well as memorable. I will never think of chocolate the same way again.

We were driving Old Mamaloa highway while sightseeing (on a Saturday) and saw a handmade sign pointing us to Art Glass so we pulled in. Turned out we had found the studio for Big Island Glass. They were so friendly and invited us to watch them blow glass. We watched Hugh make two pieces and he talked us through everything. They have a second small gallery there as well. We had a great time (including my teens and my parents -in their 70s). They make beautiful art!! Highly recommend you stop in and visit them!
