Musgrove Mill State Historic Site

We visited Musgrove Mill as a family and really enjoyed it. At the Welcome center is the history of Musgrove Mills. The hike around the lake was flat grass/gravel and great to wekk on. Just down the road is a small overlook that is wheel-chair/stroller accesible and a small creek for the children to play in. Fun!!!

The town of Ninety Six was inhabited by Loyalists during the Revolutionary War. The earthen fort was built in a star formation by the British to protect the townspeople, although there were only about 100 inhabitants. The fort was besieged in 1781 by troops under the command of General Nathaniel Greene, but they were not successful in gaining access to the fort. As the citizens and the British troops evacuated the town, they set fire to all the buildings. There is a paved trail as well as gravel trails emanating from the main one. Along the trail are interpretive panels, historical information, and information about the town. This is an archeological and historical site of great importance. Highly recommended!

Rose Hill Plantation State Historic Site

Reviewed By Anthony P - Charleston, South Carolina

Plantation and outbuildings, including garden, that date from the mid 19th century. The first owner of the house was the SC Governor in power when secession was voted on. The house itself was the Governor's mansion and you are left to imagine the incredibly important people that sat in the parlor before they collectively decided to go down a path that would lead to the bloodiest war in US history.

The home is full of artifacts, some of which were there when Gist was in power, others merely from the period. Many of these things are absolutely stunning, and provide a real insight into the handicraft of the artisans at the time.

This place is definitely worth a visit. There are often events at the property which provide for greater interpretation of that time period. Even without these events, tours of the house are amazing, and since the home is air conditioned and centrally heated, its good to visit regardless of the weather.

This place is a gem and provides a great window into the times. Definitely recommend!!! Would recommend for almost anyone - however, this place is full of beautiful antiques - probably not the best location for rambunctious kids.

Cross Keys Plantation

Reviewed By Tracy W - Lexington, Kentucky

On our way to another plantation, we saw this one from the road and noticed it was open. We stopped and joined the tour. The tour guide was extremely enthusiastic about the subject, although he liked talking about the Civil War re-enactments that happen here periodically, and often got sidetracked. You do get to see the whole house, including the attic.
This is a more rustic and rough around the edges place than the nearby state owned Rose Hill State Historic Site, but it's also considerably older and visiting both in one day (which is easily do-able) gives a great sense of early nineteenth century construction practices and lifestyle.
Cross Keys is only open on Saturdays, but tours are free.

Laurens Historic District

Reviewed By drmomaa - Asheville, North Carolina

Laurens, South Carolina, is a small town (9,000+) residents located in the northwestern part of South Carolina. The center of the town is the large, beautiful courthouse built in the 1800s. A short drive down West Main Street is filled with beautiful churches and Victorian homes, also built in the 1800s. Definitely worth a visit!
