Delamar Ghost Town

Remote and therefore well-preserved ghost town.

The road to Delmar is not well marked, but hopefully you will run into locals coming down from Delmar to guide you on your route. Met two groups of people that gave great directions to us. The ride, drive was well worth it. So picturesque, quiet and photo graph worthy. Our 6500 mile trip to Death Valley and Ryolite would have been incomplete without Delamar.

Was headed to Ely and needed an overnight spot to gave this a try. Glad we did. At $25 a night, with full hook ups, it was best deal of the trip. About 15 sites and only 5 were occupied, so it was a quiet time. The sites are big and level but not much shade. With the high cliffs on each side, the sun sets "early" so you get that shade early. The bathrooms were the nicest of our trip, too. You do pay $2 in quarters for the shower, but you get 4 mins and the water is warm....and the shower stall is tile, big and clean! The campground is at the entrance to the park and about 2 miles back in the "park/green spot" area with picnic grounds, wading pool and trails. All in the "valley" area.

Caliente Railroad Depot

The building is a wonderful mission style building. The library is now at one end with offices located in other parts of the building. We talked to the Library attendant for quite awhile as she was very friendly and helpful.

Oak Springs Trilobite Area

We stumbled across this little BLM park a couple of years ago and wandered around, not knowing anything about what we were looking at or looking for. This time we came back with the specific intention of spending some time here with a couple of rock hammers (a flat heat screwdriver would have been handy) to search for TRILOBITES. We stayed in Caliente and ventured out west 12miles to the park. short drive off of the main road and a short walk to the shale. One of the reviews here felt that it didn't meet her expectations. Well, that's what happens when you don't read the readerboard at the trailhead. This is little stuff - maybe bits and pieces of 500 million year old life. You have to get down on your hands and knees and have good side-lighting to have the story unfold. A lot of people seem to dig and pry loose chunks of shale (and seemingly they didn't bring the tools to split them apart - a REALLY easy process). Even without a tool, you can find lots of heads, and thoraxes, and sometimes a full trilobite - though it will be encased in stone. You have to look. They may only be a half inch across and a half inch long. They are lying on the ground in the rocks that others have thrown away. Your kids may be bored out of their minds but the thrill of opening up a piece of shale that was laid down 500 million years ago is just amazing. Look at the pictures i've attached. I could spend days here and i'm not a rock hound.
