The 6 Best Things to do Good for Couples in New London, Connecticut (CT)

September 11, 2021 Jacquiline Delozier

The city of New London, Connecticut, has been an important port since the Revolutionary War, when it served as a base for American privateers raiding British Ships. In the 19th century, the revenues brought into the city by whalers helped build what now forms the city's charming center, filled with historic homes, taverns and shops. The masts of tall ships can still be seen passing through the harbor, the home of Coast Guard ships and the site of the annual Sailfest summer celebration.

Garde Arts Center

Despite a snow storm, the theater was packed! We went to see The Simon & Garfunkel Story. The show was wonderful, the seats were comfortable, there really isn't a bad seat in the house! The show bulletin was informative and the upcoming offerings includes shows and movies. There is lots of parking available on the side streets, in the library close to the Arts Center. This was our first visit to this venue and I wouldn't hesitate to return! For a wonderful evening out, go to the Garde! You are able to enjoy a beverage in the lobby as well as in the theater.

Block Island Express Ferry

The price for the ferry is about $45/person round trip. The crew is efficient in getting people off and on the boat. Additionally, on the return visit the seas were a little rougher and I saw one of the crew spend about 1/2 the ride reassuring a scared younger passenger. The ride last just over an hour and there are plenty of seats inside or a few seats outside. Definitely the best way to get to the Island. Very fast!

Ocean Beach Park

We came on a Tuesday afternoon from about 11 AM until 3. We were actually happy to find so much parking close to the boardwalk and for only $20. (Have seen other beaches in Connecticut charge much more.) The large bathroom services were clean and well maintained. There was a nice open paved area and a boarded walkway along the beach, parts were shaded and benches were available. There was a beach shop where we purchased an inexpensive umbrella and a sand bucket for our toddler. The sand was soft and clean, the water very chilly, but refreshing. Lifeguards are on duty. While on the beach we viewed the ferry going by several times and even a submarine! It was not too crowded on our day and the people on the beach were very nice. After enough sun, we made our way over to the little carnival where our toddler rode the merry-go-round, Then we went over to the mini golf and played a round under the shade of the trees there. The gentleman working the ticket booth was very nice, giving our toddler his own mini-club to play with. What a great time we had at the beach.
