The 6 Best Self-Guided Tours & Rentals in Agrigento, Sicily

December 28, 2021 Nobuko Falco

Though Agrigento is a modern city of about 60,000 on Sicily’s southwest coast, the majority of visitors come to experience the past just outside of town. At the Valley of the Temples (Valle dei Templi), citizens of the then-major Greek colony of Akragras began building seven Doric style holy monuments in the sixth century BC. The nearby Archaeological Museum helps put everything into context. Agrigento also has some fascinating sights in its old town, like the medieval Norman cathedral.

We had the pleasure of being driven by both Roberto and Sabine over several days in southern Sicily. Both are extremely capable and knowledgeable drivers who took great care to ensure we were comfortable. They added greatly to our enjoyment of the area by providing valuable information about Sicily and making sure we got to see the best sights. I recommend them very highly!

we did this tour just to go to Castelbouno, the winery was a nice addition. Castelbuono is the home to the maker of the best panettone in all of Italy. We enjoyed the free samples & had only seen Castelbuono at night, 6 years ago. It was lovely to see it in the daylight, along with all the lovely residents. One huge concern...our original bus had a problem with the speaker so it was changed out nearby. We noticed that the tires on this bus were BALD, no treads! These buses go up high on narrow mountain roads, this is crazy & dangerous! Fortunately, our new bus had slightly better tires, but we were glad for the speaker glitch.

We experienced a misunderstanding, causing us to pay for the cable railway to go to the top of mount Etna without using it. The bus driver, Alessandro, was extremely understanding and helped us to get the money back. Top service and a very nice experience.
