There are many horse riding tours offered by guys in the streets of Trinidad, however I recommend you book with Jojanny. Lovely, friendly guide who clearly looks after his horses compared to other ones we saw with other tours. Safety equipment is provided, and the tour includes a stop at a coffee farm and a sugarcane farm as well as, of course, the waterfall. These stops give you the chance to really immerse in the local, rural community and try things you wouldn’t normally. The route Jojanny took us on was also very scenic and away from the crowds of other tours and the tour was extremely good value for money!! Gracias Jojanny!!

We used Sr. Miguel who is local to Trinidad to guide us for this tour (he also runs a Casa Particlares - Hostel Mi Osi if you want somewhere to live in central Trinidad). [email protected] +53 58 071644 and we can highly recommend him. Vegas Grande Waterfall We started 9 am from Trinidad and where back at 4 pm and visited some different hillside places including a stop for local coffee. The really nice part was with the nature trail back and fort to the Vegas Grande Waterfall where you can also have a refrehsing bath. It was partly a rough climb so you need to be somewhat fit.

Parque el Cubano

Spent the morning here as part of our tour. We had the use of a knowlegeable local guide, who pointed out the local flora and fauna. Over a rope bridge, following a river, sometimes the path is smooth and flat, other times climbing up some gentle rocky hills, around 4-5 kilometres each way. Stopped in an isolated farmers hut midway for a cup of brew. The destination is a waterfall, rockpool and the chance to do a spot of swimming before heading back. Very enjoyable easy paced ramble through some delightful countryside. On return to the start, we had a buffet style lunch, with some very sweet coffee.

Valle de los Ingenios

Took the steam train from Trinidad through the valley. It is not that far a trip in miles but the train is pretty slow so you leave at 9.30am and are not back until just after 3pm. I enjoyed the slow pace though as you got to take in the countryside and everything that was happening outside your window - and could take photos at your leisure. The stops were also nicely varied whereby you could go up the slave watch-tower or just stroll around the stalls/shops at the first one, then experience the living museum sugar mill at the second then have a bit of chill time at the ranch/estate of the last stop or go for a horseback ride if you prefer. Was actually much more to do and see than I had thought.
