The 6 Best Classes & Workshops in Malá Strana (Little Quarter), Bohemia

June 26, 2021 Brandee Mangan

The bohemian allure and fairytale features of Prague make it a perfect destination for beach-weary vacationers who want to immerse themselves in culture. You could devote an entire day to exploring Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle), then refueling over a hearty dinner at a classic Czech tavern. Spend some time wandering the Old Town Square before heading over to gape at The Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock. Prague’s best bars are found in cellars, where historic pubs set the scene for a night of traditional tippling.

I am offering a unique first-hand experience of a mesmerising 170-years-old photographic technique called wet plate collodion. No digital camera hidden inside a decrepit bellows - this is the real deal, 100% handmade original photographs on tin plates that will last for many generations (and perhaps confuse a future archeologist or two). By booking with me you will not only get an everlasting memory of you time spent in Prague, but also experience the magic of 19th century photography in real life and gain an understanding of how difficult yet rewarding photography was back then. I am an experienced portrait and documentary photographer with a small studio at Malá Strana, the Lesser Side, in the very heart of old Prague. I have had the pleasure of working with hundreds of clients from all over the world. My works was awarded with several prizes including two 1st place awards at Czech Press Photo (Portrait, Arts).

Saki (as old friends call him) has not changed since we met on highschool 25 years ago. Buddy with specific skills, interests and opinions able to be absolutely focused on what is he doing. It was really pleasure spent some time in Saki’s atelier with my kids and got amazingly looking photo produced by photographic process from the 1850s called wet plate collodion. If you are still looking for any xmas presents, stop doing that and visit studio located in the historic centre of Prague (Malá Strana). You will take away an unforgettable experience and stunning metal sheet. Lukas

Smalterie - is a fun creative workshop both for children and adults who like to try new things or just create a unique souvenir from Prague :) In just an hour, we will teach you how to use enamel and you can go ahead and paint your own mug (or other enamel articles such as a sign or enamel jewelry). Of course, you can stay longer - there is no time limit! If you have not done it before, it is no problem at all - our patient tutors will explain everything (in English or in Czech). After you have finished painting we will fire it in our furnace and after it cools down (approximately 5 minutes) you can take your creation home with you :) The cost of painting one mug is 290 Kč.

It's hard to miss the lovely enamel mugs everywhere in Old Town - here's a chance to create your own! In the back of a tourist shop, there's a lovely little workshop where you can paint your own mugs or signs, which they then bake so that the enamel is permanent. The staff person was friendly, helpful, patient, fun, and spoke English. My teenage son and I had a blast and walked away with great souvenirs. If you have kids that are tired of looking at things (or if you are tired of looking at things), here's a great way to spend some time creating. It was a highlight of our trip!
