Went on a Sunday morning. This is about an hour’s drive from Amsterdam. Hired a self driving boat for 2 hours and drove in mad traffic through the canals till we reached the lake where it was bliss. The whole boat ride was very scenic and you can either go around this town in a boat or walk around or cycle around but with a boat you can also go on the lake which is very good

Start your visit to Giethoorn in Museum Giethoorn 't Olde Maat Uus! The museum is located in an original historical farmhouse. It is the only place in Giethoorn where you can see how people lived more than 100 years ago and how they earned a meagre living by cutting peat and building small boats (‘punters’).
Nice small museum which gives you all the information about the past of the area. Amazing to know that the landscape as it is today was man-made. All the canals were dug out by workers who cut turf which was used as fuel for fire, for heating and cooking. The museum tells you all about how it came about, how the people used to live and what life was like hundreds of years ago. Very educational and interesting. Nice for the whole family. A visit will take you 1-2 hours.
