Carl Sandburg Home National Historic Site

Home of poet Carl Sandburg and his family. Located on 264-acres in Western North Carolina. The site includes 5-miles of hiking trails, a dairy goat farm and offers daily tours of the Sandburg Home.

Spent a few hours here on a pleasant, autumn day. The grounds are well kept, and the paths are easy walks. The goat farm area is interesting with wonderful volunteers who have a lot of fascinating information. Nearby, there is a vegetable garden planted and maintained by volunteers. Unfortunately, the plantings are not identified. By the restrooms, there are interesting informative plaques. We brought lunch and ate at one of the picnic tables near the lake, which was surrounded by trees with changing color leaves. There is no admission fee, but be sure to put a few dollars in the donation box. There is a fee for the house tour, but we did not do it.

Every time we visit the North Carolina mountains, The Wrinkled Egg is a must-do! Great souvenirs and many items made by local artisans. The shop is among some of my favorite lunch places too...Flat Rock Bakery, Hubba Hubba BBQ & Campfire.

The Park at Flat Rock

Reviewed By mfspears - Greenville, United States

This is a very well maintained park just outside of Hendersonville, NC. There are nice restroom facilities, ample parking spaces, picnic areas, and a nice playground for children. Trails are partially paved with the other areas being loose stone. There were people of all ages and ability levels using the trails. Benches are provided near the stream which allow visitors to stop and enjoy the tranquility of the area. Lots of well behaved dogs on leashes with their owners.

Sky Top Orchard

We are a Pick-your-own apple orchard offering family-fun activities including hayrides, farm animal viewing and feeding, picnicking areas and all the fall goodies you'd expect to find. Our most popular offering are our apple cider doughnuts which are often made fresh right before your eyes. Hours are from 9a-6p daily until time change in the fall then hours are 9a-5p. We are open 7 days a week beginning Aug. 1st and we operate through the first Sunday after Thanksgiving. The only day we are closed is Thanksgiving Day. If you see hours listed here or on other review sites on dates outside this range, they are incorrect. Always check our website for the most up-to-date information.

Sky Top is very popular for a reason. The apple cider donuts (hot) are awesome. The no sugar apple butter is wonderful to take home. This place is incredibly popular and I highly recommend visiting on weekdays when the crowds are manageable. If you plan on going apple picking, know that the orchard is on a hill and you will have to walk up and down a rather steep hill. Wear appropriate footwear and make sure your party is prepared.
