excellent interpretive center, beautiful and haunting drive, important historical significance, and makes you reflect upon the events and soldiers in the civil war. I would recommend this to anybody, even those who are not interested in the civil war--it shows the stark reality of the trials (and horrors) of the civil war, while also providing the larger picture of the strategies of both sides. At the time, this was one of the most significant battles in the Western theatre of the civil war. Take the time for the driving tour, well worth it. The staff were helpful and knowledgeable.

Situated on a high bluff overlooking the Tennessee River with mature trees and many squirrels going about their business, Shiloh National Cemetery is peaceful and one of the more beautiful National Cemeteries that I have visited and, like all national cemeteries, well maintained. It is also one of the easiest and most rewarding to explore with generally flat, shady, brick paths and benches to sit and contemplate the many sacrifices. While members of all branches of the military and from all wars are buried here, the majority are from the Civil War, almost 3,600, which were disinterred from the battlefield 1866 and reinterned in the newly establish National Cemetery. As one walks around the cemetery, one will be struck by the large number of these that are unknown, 2,359, marked only with a small square headstone and a number. As with all National Cemeteries, fallen rebellious Confederates, not technically being US personnel, were not removed from the battlefield reinterned. Most remain in eleven or twelve mass graves of which only the location of five have been identified.

We spent more than three hours touring the Shiloh battlefield with Larry DeBerry, an experienced, knowledgeable and genuinely entertaining guide. He gave us such a detailed account of the battle that we felt like it was taking place before us but, what was equally as impressive, was his insight into the people and the community that was impacted by the battle and the war. His family history in the area goes back to the Civil War and his stories brought the battle to the human level. Our tour concluded with him giving us a folder of materials to expand our knowledge. We could easily have spent several more hours with him.

Visited Feb 24 2019. Got Pictures of two bald eagles before entering the Indian mounds area. Then got Pictures of two types of squirrels and a red headed woodpecker. The trails were great even after weeks of heavy rain. Some puddles and a bit of mud but you could easily walk around the bad spots. The Mounds trail is 1.1 miles from the pavilion and back in a loop through the woods. Very scenic. It is a relatively easy walk if you have good shoes and no major health problems. Someone in a wheel chair can see much of the "village" area by driving to the small parking area in the middle and observing from there. The trails into the woods would be difficult in a wheel chair. Other than some roots in the trails there were no major hazards if you stay on the main trails. If you decide to explore off the trails around the main mound, there is a very dangerous drop off to the river. I wouldn't recommend bringing young children down behind that mound. Other wise the main areas are quite safe with rails and some fencing as needed. This is a great area for pictures. There is a nice view of a segment of the TN River and lots of wild life. The streams were really nice after all the rain. Lots of little water falls.
