This place is amazing. It is full of various types of native American rock art. A lot of it is viewable from the road or in the area immediately around the museum. The museum was fascinating. Too bad so much was lost to I-70.

This is a place where ATV's and all such things like dirt bikes, sise-by-sides, quads, Razors etc...are welcome. This area is designed for that use and it is promoted and supported by locals. It is a big part of the economy for this area and it is a well-done system. Get a map at any of the local stores and enjoy endless trips to the mountains. Especially nice in the fall, but good all year around. In the hot weather, just climb the mountain and cool off. Still snow on the ground up there right now. A lot of it is roads, but a lot is specifically for atvs.We stay at the Big Rock Campgroiund and love it....good access to trails and a bicycle path too. The BIg Rock Cafe is the best place to eat now that it is under new management...awesome. Enjoy the rides.

The lodging:
We stayed at holly ridge #7 & #8. We found hair in the bath tub, someone else's dirty underwear under the bed and a used container of chocolate milk between the couch and the wall. There were cobwebs in every window seal and every corner of the house. The walk way was not properly cleared of snow. The road plowing does not happen promptly or adequately.
Skyline lodge:
The rental shop looked as if it had not been vacuumed all season. We had to spend an hour in the rental shop waiting to get skis. The men's bathroom appears as it has not been properly cleaned in many years. There were urine stains around the bottom of the toilet bowl first thing in the morning. The overwhelming stench of urine mixed with forced hot air make the bathroom unbearable. The hot water does not work well and the hand dryer only blows cold air. It is almost impossible to properly wash your hands in this restroom, I wonder how the employees properly was their hands in that restroom.
Canyon side lodge:
Food at canyon side is expensive, difficult to order and not worth the price or wait. We ordered a pitcher of beer and some hot wings. It took 30 min to get our wings. They arrived cold and looked like the same ones you get at the frozen food section at Costco. They came without any dipping sauces, when we as the waitress for dipping sauce she said the wings didn't come with sauce. We requested some blue cheese and it arrived with a mysterious floating chunk in the sauce. The celery garnish was limp and stale.

The skiing is fantastic. Customer service is wanting. If you go take your own food, be prepared to rough it.

The scenery and river were as pleasant as it gets. The area isn't built up and the river runs through beautiful canyons with many geologic features. The river was fairly high but not running too fast and it allowed us to swim in some places which added a lot to the experience. It's a reasonable activity for most able bodied persons, not overly physical. The river has a big mix of "coasting" vs. rapids and the 7.5 miles is a great length to cover.

You can stay very inexpensively nearby, just don't expect "resort" features. There's also lots of hiking. The cost is also extremely reasonable.

I did not expect this to be as good as an activity as it turned out to be. A great way to be outdoors!
