For those interested in temple architecture and art, the Trikuteshwara complex is a must visit. The richness and quality of the sculptures, the plan and the spaces is a marvel. One can spend a lot of hours here. This is from the Western Chalukyan era around 11th century CE. In fact, the architecture has its own name 'Gadag School of Architecture".
I did not have time to go to the other complexes of Lakkundi and Dambal which I regret and hope to make it up some other day.
Note: The entry to the complex is through a village and tourists may have to walk past women washing clothes, children running around and so on. So beware.

This is a rare treat. A 1000 year old Jain temple which has both a Brahma and a Jain Tirthankar.
The columns are a treat to old engineering with perfect shapes. One must go there to really see it. Will post a picture later on this.

I did the circuit of a set of Western Chalukyan (or Later Chalukyan or Kalyani Chalukyan as opposed to the earlier Badami Chalukyan) Temples around Hubballi and Gadag in North Karnataka during the Ganesh Chaturthi holidays last year (2015). The Western Chalukyas represent the link between their predecessors (Badami Chalukyas) and later schools of Karnataka temple architecture (especially the Hoysalas at Belur, Halebidu, Somnathapur etc). They have been less studies as compared to the exploits of the Badami Chalukyas at the Badami-Aihole-Pattadakkal triangle.
In fact, the overall neglect of these temples in terms of visitors (and maintenance) makes for a sad sight albeit that it makes the visit to much more pleasurable for you have most of these places to yourself.
Doddabasappa Temple in Dambal (about 25 kms from Gadag in North Karnataka) is reached through a beautiful drive featuring lovely countryside. It was also the most peopled of the temples I went to. There were about 10 people at any given point during my 2-hr stay at the temple which is a lot given what I found at other Western Chalukyan Temples in my visit.
The temple also presented the most unified sight of all the temples I visited with a unique Shikara that is visible from quite a distance just as the bus veers off the main road into Dambal village. The Shikara looks like it has been draped around multiple times by a long tapestry in stone and this is what lends it a harmonious geometry. The other highlight of the temple is a huge Nandi standing guard to the Garbagriha.

Gadag has improved its green corridors in recent times and city infrastructure in terms of road connectivity , trains is way good than it was before. BASAVESHWAR STATUE is located just inside main city entrance and easily visible when you enter Gadag city . The statue looks great when viewed from certain distance and also close up look . The area surrounding statue is covered with artificial water bodies and made arrangements for boating by local authorities. Local people spend time for walking , jogging around the statue and enjoy boating . The pricing of boating is 85/per person for 30-45 minutes which might vary . There are couple of other great temples and monuments surrounding Gadag which could be clubbed to watch on same day . Happy travelling !

We visited in group here.the temple was big,it has history,u can rest here.big varanda.poet Kumaravyasa write Jaimi Bharata book here.the ideol oflord Narayana swamy is v attractive.The enterence Kanan was v big.we spent an hour here.Its in the Gadag city.
