Starts in a flat pine forest but don't worry, you leave the mundane soon enough. There's a beautiful creek crossing (where backpackers can stay) , then down down to a steep spot to the first waterfalls. It gets more lovely but rougher from there. Climb up to the source of the falls right when you get there, it makes a picnic or rest-break by the falls so much more relaxing and gives your legs a rest before the hike back. Some side-hikes add to the adventure. This is a remote area - you will see other hikers but plan to be on your own.. bring water and tread carefully, as a sprained ankle or exhausted kid could extend your say until dark. Texts go out in some areas, but not all. I always bring a headlamp .. as I often stay at the falls area longer than expected. Thankfully, that first boring part of the trail is easy by moonlight.

Burgess Falls State Park

This park contains 4 breathtaking waterfalls as well as fishing and picnic areas. Also included is a round trip, moderately strenuous hike of about a mile and a half, and a butterfly garden very close by. More information on this park and many more can be found at the TN State Parks website.

A hidden gem! There are restrooms and parking lots that lead to the trail to the big falls. If you can't make it to the big falls, the cascading falls right by the parking lot are also stunning! It's about an hour there and back if you walk quickly. Along the way are several beautiful cascading falls and an old dilapidated suspension bridge. It is labeled as a strenuous hike up to the viewing platform and a "very strenuous" hike from there to the top of the falls. It is a steep trail but it is pretty short and aside from the climb, it is not hard. There are areas where there is no rail. It's magnificent. It's not far off of I 40 or TN 111.

We stopped in for a tasting and we're pleased with everything we had. Our server was very friendly and made us feel welcome. The wines we had were very good. But the one who stole the show was Bo, a Great Dane that was super friendly. The picnic area was very nice as well.
