Abbaye aux Dames

The Abbaye aux Dames is today the musical hub of Saintes. It was the first convent in the Saintonge region. The nuns were powerful women, wearing crosses and striking coins. The influence of the abbey was vast. This is still true today thanks to its musical activities and its unique architectural heritage. The Notre Dames church is a pearl of Romanesque art. The portal is richly decorated. The bell tower, in the shape of a pine cone and covered in stone scales, can be visited. Why not follow the path to heaven, you'll find a panoramic view over the town of Saintes. Discover the convent building, from its chapter house to the nuns' private quarters.

Arc de Germanicus

Reviewed By antmontaq - Sydney, Australia

I guess from a tourist perspective it's an interesting monument. Perched on the edge of the Cherante river in a tranquil setting, it really stands out. It's history traces back to the 18 or 19 AD! Germanicus of course, from history, was the adopted son of Emperor Tiberius. The stunning stone masonry is impressive. It's worth a look and the little park surrounding this monument is a great spot to relax and soak up the history and the grand ambience of this city. It takes me about fifteen minutes walk from Gare de Saintes but there's bus services from the station here. Look out for the Bernard Palissy bridge and the Passerelle de Saintes footbridge nearby. Worth a look.
