Oregon Rail Heritage Center

Only working Steam Railroad Museum in Oregon. We have three vintage steam locomotives, machine shop, rail history exhibits, gift shop, and space for birthday parties. 10-mile train rides on Saturdays, Holiday Express train trips in November/December. Home to the American Freedom Train, driven 32,000 miles across America during the Bicentennial. This GS-4 locomotive is the last operating steam locomotive of its kind (Streamliner, created in an art deco motif), and is the most photographed engine in the world.

My family has always been into trains. I take train rides whenever I get a chance. The price of this place being free is amazing but I made sure to donate.

This was a first train travel experience and we loved it! The building is beautiful, signs clearly tell you were to go and the people were helpful. On the train you have room to stretch out and move around in the cars. Great trip.

Sumpter Valley Railroad

Reviewed By mikewestby2017 - Portland, United States

The Sumpter Valley Railroad is one of our favorite attractions in Oregon. As travel authors, we found it to be confusing trying to figure out when the train departed and returned, how long we had at its terminus, and where it was leaving from and returning to. (Hint: it's not Sumpter). As a result, we researched it all and wrote up a detailed description on how best to enjoy the Sumpter Valley Railroad for one of our Oregon road trip books. You'll find that information here. We hope it's of value to you. Mike Westby The Sumpter Valley Railroad is guaranteed to be a highlight of your travels in Oregon, giving you a taste of actual Oregon history as you board an authentic 1890 narrow gauge steam train and travel back in time. You’ll hear the chuff-chuff-chuff of the powerful locomotive and the shrill of its steam whistle as you ply the rails from McEwen, OR to the historic mining town of Sumpter, OR and back. Better yet, you can even ride in the cab! The train makes round-trip journeys from McEwen, OR north to Sumpter, OR during select weekends and major holidays from Memorial Day Weekend through the last weekend in September. During some weekends, the train will make two round trips, creating four departure times; two from McEwen and two from Sumpter, and during other weekends, which correspond with a large flea market in Sumpter, the train will make three round trips, thereby creating six different departure times, three from each town. Our recommendation is to enjoy this unique Oregon experience as follows: (Assumes you’re staying overnight in Baker City, OR) 1. Depart Baker City and drive 23 miles southwest along the Elkhorn Scenic Byway (Hwy 7) to arrive at the Sumpter Valley Railroad depot in McEwen by 9:30 a.m. for the 10:00 a.m. train to Sumpter. This will give you enough time to purchase your tickets and explore the train up close. Tickets as of press time are $21.00 round-trip for adults, ages 5 – 15 are $12.00, and children ages 4 and under travel at no charge. The travel time aboard the train from McEwen to Sumpter is approximately 45 minutes. 2. Ride the train north to Sumpter, depart and explore the Sumpter Valley Dredge State Heritage Area, showcasing the fascinating Sumpter Valley Gold Dredge. 3. Board the 11:30 a.m. or 12:00 noon train back to McEwen, depending upon the schedule for that weekend. Note that after you arrive back at McEwen via the train ride, you will then be driving north to Sumpter, where you will have additional time to explore the town, its shops and flea market, which runs every Memorial Day, 4th of July and Labor Day weekend. You may either call the Sumpter Valley Railroad at 541-894-2268 or email [email protected] to make reservations. Note: We tried many times to make our reservations prior to Memorial Day Weekend using these two contacts but never received a response, so we bought our tickets, including the General Cab Pass, at the train depot in McEwen, which worked out fine. Ride in the Cab of a Locomotive! Note: Also available on a limited first-come, first-served basis is a ride up front in the locomotive with the engineers, a truly unique Oregon experience. Cab passes may be purchased for $45 for adults or $30 for passengers ages 5 to 17, and this provides a one-way trip in the locomotive cab, a return trip on board the passenger train and a one-year membership in the Sumpter Valley Railroad. Closed toe shoes are required, and be mindful of where the Tender car joins the locomotive cab while riding, or you could crush a toe. (Don’t let that stop you from riding in the cab!) Driving Directions: Depart Baker City and drive The Elkhorn Scenic Byway (Hwy 7) southwest 23 miles to McEwen. Turn left off the highway at the sign for the Sumpter Valley Railroad and park in their large parking lot near the restored train depot. Sumpter Valley Railroad Depot 12259 Huckleberry Loop Baker City, OR 97814 Note: Though it is called the Sumpter Valley Railroad, the depot in the town of McEwen is the originating depot for the railway and all trains from here are round-trip to Sumpter and back unless otherwise noted.
