We got offered a one night stay by friends on our original wedding day. Our wedding was postponed last minute (1 day in advance) due to a large portion of family members being unexpectedly quarantined as precaution because 1 person tested postive for the corona virus (no travelling or partying by anyone, only small family gatherings). Our friends contacted the establishment to inquire about a possible postponement or cancellation, which the establishment refused, which is their right to be fair. But their response then went nucleair. Because the cancellation request mentioned the corona related quarantine of family members, they assumed (without asking for more information) we were at risk and then attempted to refuse us entry without paying them back. Our friends then inquired if they could go instead, they also refused that without explanation. After our friends indicated that this was illegal and they would not stand for this, they claim to have contacted the Federal health care institution and organisation for tourism which they claim advised them to make us provide documents by a physician that we did NOT need to be in quarantine. Mind you that at the point they tried this, it was the day of the booking and this too is not something they can legally require to allow for them to refuse us entrance without the payback, so that was rather coniving. At this point our friends contacted an ombudsman who drew up a complaint at around the same time the establishment messaged them that they would allow us to come 'in good faith' if we left our contact information (which is something that they can ask for as a covid-19 measure). Our friends told us we were good to go, so we went and arrived around 5PM to check in. We were greeted with 'we didn't expect you would come', and then an explanation that us coming meant that there would be no payback, which we were fine with (somewhat confused). But they then demanded that we contact our friends to withdraw the complaint (again, illegal). We tried but they were at work and not available at that exact moment after which we were allowed entrance on a forced promise that we tell them to come in to discuss the situation when they came to pick us up for our diner reservation. We left our information, including our social security number (rijksregisternummer) which they then demanded to check, which we allowed to avoid further trouble, even though that too is technically illegal. While doing this they repeated that they were letting us stay in 'good faith' and that they were assuming that we would not be that 'anti-social' to show up if we were known to be at risk of being infected, which seems very hypocritical with what we now know they tried earlier. The room was nice, very clean and well equiped, the in-room wellness was a little lacking though which makes the accomodation overpriced imo. There is only a very good hot tub, and a not fully installed infrared sauna unit. They explained this was because the power supply was insufficient to service the entire unit, but it was ok, because that was only necessary according to them if more than 2 people used it. Though to us it was pretty clear that the unit wouldn't fit more than 2 at a time. Everything else looked fine, the bed was good, everything else was provided for, except the promissed bottle of bubbles. The room was very cosy and nicely decorated. Our friends came to pick us up and we informed them of the situation, (at this point we didn't know all the info of paragraph 2) and they refused to go inside as was demanded. After they informed us about all the communications (and showed us the e-mails) we understood why. The rest of the night was good and we slept well enough. At the 9AM breakfast we were greeted by the owner with a rant of how we didn't keep our 'promise' and she felt that we didn't treat her right as a host (wtf???) and that she never wanted to see us again. We obviously responded in kind and told her we can't force people to do things and it wasn't really our responsibility to clean her mess. In all the conversations we had with the owner, she never showed any kind of respect towards us, nor our emotional stressfull situation. She only talked about her own 'misery' which this sitation brought upon her. A situation that she (in my opinion) brought on herself, by not willing to listen to us/our friends and not showing any kind of empathy or hospitatilty. The breakfast was still provided and was decent but the whole experience itself was ruined for us. We left 2 hours earlier than our payed for late checkout because we felt it was pointless to stay in such a bad and unwelcoming atmosphere. Other guests (we saw at the breakfast table) did seem to have a great time, so I am assuming that if a reservation goes off without a hitch, it could be a pleasant experience, but the hostess is just terrible at crisis management and being professional in difficult circumstances. The only other staff we saw was friendly however and apologised for the situation at checkout which was very nice. We told them it wasn't their fault and wished them a nice day. And that concluded the worst experience at an accomodation in our lives so far.

Just as it should

Just good value for money. If you come from abroad, you might consider to take train to Nevele or Gent and rent/loan an electric car at Steenhoven. Eco friendly and likely better budget then renting a car at airport or station.

Interesting place to stay

This little gem of a B&B was perfect for our needs. We wanted to be close but not too close to Brussels, near Gent and other places. It was just right. Hilde was a wonderful hostess. The room was spotless, nicely appointed and equipped. The garden is magnificent. We ate our fill of raspberries and strawberries each day and there was plenty left for others. It took a bit to find the place but once there very worthwhile. When we return in the fall we will try to stay there again.

ECCENTRIC

Reviewed By 147ChrisB

Had a really nice one night stay following a drive down from Amsterdam. The rooms give the appearance of a completely modernised stable block fitted out in the style of a Swedish Sauna ! Small bar run on a help yourself basis and keeping tally on post it note. Very rural location and very quiet . Had an excellent nights sleep on comfortable bed and good powerful shower . However wash basin tap produced slow trickle so need to run for 10 minutes to warm up. Pleasant enough continental breakfast although coffee machine rather hogged by members of a cycling group. Would suggest well worth a stay on the way to or from the channel ports as an alternative to usual chain motels. Keep an open mind and you will enjoy its laid back atmosphere
