The 5 Best History Museums in Nove Mesto (New Town), Bohemia

May 1, 2022 Elouise Mccaul

The bohemian allure and fairytale features of Prague make it a perfect destination for beach-weary vacationers who want to immerse themselves in culture. You could devote an entire day to exploring Prazsky hrad (Prague Castle), then refueling over a hearty dinner at a classic Czech tavern. Spend some time wandering the Old Town Square before heading over to gape at The Old Town Hall and Astronomical Clock. Prague’s best bars are found in cellars, where historic pubs set the scene for a night of traditional tippling.

Cold War Museum

I toured the Cold War Museum and had the most amazing guide - David! He is extremely knowledgeable about the time period - key politicians, the political climate in (Czechoslovakia) and surrounding countries, and every day life for people living in Prague at that time. I grew up in the US during the 80's and there was always the specter of nuclear war w Russia. I remember stories of high profile people defecting. But-until visiting this museum, I just didn't have a good appreciation for life under the 'cruel star' of communism. The collection is fascinating - I especially loved seeing the spy equipment that was used at the time that enabled 'Big Brother' to listen in on conversations of hotel guests (the bunker was built below the hotel Jalta, as mentioned). Just fascinating! Prague is full of history - and I highly recommend this museum to enrich your visit. Note to David-I found that Amazon has the book "Under a Cruel Star". Also, as we discussed - check out Anne Applebaum - Iron Curtain! Thank you so much for a great tour!!

Muzeum komunismu

This museum looks at what Czech society and life was like under the Communist regime.

Really interesting museum which relates the hardships the Czech population suffered under Communist rule. Real eye opener and some of the exhibits were quite thought provoking. Thoroughly recommend this as it’s a worthwhile visit and if you don’t really understand communism it’s a education.

New Building of the National Museum

The new building of the National Museum was obtained by the National Museum in the year 2006 and on the 1st of June 2009 the National Museum has taken over this building from the Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. The building has a very interesting history because it served at first as the Prague Stock Exchange (1938 to the arrival of the occupational forces), then as the parliament (1946–1992), radio studio (1995–2009) and at present it is has the function of a museum.

Ok, so the museum itself is continuing to develop after re-opening and doesn't have a great deal to offer yet by way of permanent exhibits. It's an astonishing building, though. There was a decent exhibit about the Velvet Revolution, and we enjoyed the very kitch Assembly Room from the 1990 Federal Government in the old Parliament Building across the road. So far - 3 stars worth. But don't try to compare this to the heavily-subsidised museums in other parts of the world. The Czec republic doesn't have that sort of money. View it for what it is. However, for your 200 entrance free (not cheap, but not so expensive compared to some of the other museums in the city) you also get free entry to all the other museums in the National Museum 'chain', as long as you visit within 5 days. This information is easy to miss - they really need to market this much more agressively and some of the museums are out of town, so would need public transport to get to. However, several are in central Prague. We visited the small but atmospheric Dvorak museum and the fantastic Music Museum all on the same ticket. We would have also done the Smetana museum - also on the same ticket - had we had the time. So just doing 3 or 4 as we did, presents quite a bargain, Thus the five stars.
