The 5 Best History Museums in Ljubljana, Upper Carniola Region

November 22, 2021 Alice Mieles

Slovenia, wedged between Austria and Italy, has always been proud of its unique heritage. The capital, Ljubljana, is a perfect example of this blend of German, Mediterranean, and Slovenian culture. The old town is a blend of Baroque, Renaissance, and Art Nouveau buildings, watched over by a medieval castle. Cut through the gardens of Tivoli Park to the National Museum of Contemporary History for a history of modern Slovenia, featuring crumbled statues of Stalin and a recreation of a WWI trench.

Nice museum inside ljubljana's castle. We got the all inclusive ticket to the castle which offers admission to the puppetry museum and we were surprised to find out that it was one of the most interesting things we saw in Ljubljana. Very nice museum with snart interactive features to play.

National Museum of Contemporary History (Muzej Novejse Zgodovine Slovenije)

The Museum explores the history of Slovenia from 1914 up to nowadays. In addition to its exhibitions, the Museum also offers a variety of programmes for both children and adults. It carries out activities in the field of culture, education and research, collaborating with various institutions, and thus serves as a bridge between the general public and historical science. It connects the fates of 20th century Slovenian people and provides visitors with answers to questions about their own identity in modern times. The Museum also serves as a gathering place for groups of all kinds and as a place for dialogue and reflection. It not only answers questions, but it also raises questions and assists visitors in their search for answers, forming a type of partnership in which the Museum serves as a dynamic, innovative and welcoming establishment.

This is a great museum, located in Tivoli Park, following the modern history of Slovenia during the 20th century. Well laid out chronologically and with translations into English, it offers a range of exhibits, including some fascinating films. Downstairs was a photographic exhibition of the work of Edi Šelhaus which we especially enjoyed. At €8 for the family to go in, this was great value for money and for us. the most interesting and enjoyable museum in Ljubljana.

National Museum of Slovenia

National Museum of Slovenia is the oldest and the largest museum institutions in Slovenia. It was founded in 1821. The museum palace in the very centre of Ljubljana was built in 1888 and was the first building in Slovenia assigned exclusively to culture. The permanent archaeological exhibition reveals the unique past of Slovenia. Among other great exhibits you can see the earliest musical instrument in the world, the 60,000-year-old Neanderthal flute as well as the situla from Vace.

As visiting museums is part of my job (as a museum auditor) I perhaps look at other things than normal visitors even when I'm on holiday as now. I first visited the permanent exhibition and it is 4 out of 5. I've read other stats saying it was too little on display. That surprises me as the collection is well displayed sometimes actually too much objects in the vitrines. Less is sometimes better for the story than 1000 of the same... It is well written with information/maps in both Slovenian and English, also films have English subtitles. Displays and rooms are light and clean. Routing / time line is easy to follow. The Roman Lapidarium is an excellent study collection. Only I can understand families complains as it is too little hands-on /interactive things for children. It is perhaps too focused on adults/students. But if I gave the permanent display 4 I would give the temporary exhibition Archeomuzika 6! What a joy to experience - with a childish smile beating the sounding rocks with antler clubs (yeah this is ROCK & roll) to hear different sounds ringing out and realise that music instruments all over Europe (and world) have much common. Chapeau to the makers of this traveling exhibition which is the result of the The European Music Archaeology Project. I truly think of coming back or revisit it at another venue. ARHEOMUZIKA- the sounds and music of ancient Europe is on display in Ljubljana until 24th of September 2017.

Slovenski solski muzej

The Slovenian School Museum in Ljubljana, founded in 1898, is the oldest specialised museum in Slovenia focusing on a specific sphere of man's activities. Unlike the Provincial Museum in Ljubljana (1821) and the municipal museums in Celje (1882) and Ptuj (1895), the Slovenian School Museum was not limited to the territories of the then administrative units; the museum can thus be regarded the...
