The 10 Best Wineries & Vineyards in Queenstown, South Island

November 4, 2021 Renato Branum

Staggering beauty and heart-pumping thrills await in the resort town of Queenstown, which is also known for its Hobbits—much of the Lord of the Rings trilogy was filmed in the area. Outdoor enthusiasts flock to Queenstown for the kayaking, bungee jumping, jetboating, white-water rafting, hiking and skiing. More mild-mannered adventurers can take a quiet cruise through nearby Milford Sound, part of the Fjordland National Park World Heritage area, or sample South Island pinot noir from one of the region's 75 wineries.

Three Miners Cellar Door

In the 1860’s, Thomas Oliver, Joseph Knowles and James Simmonds among thousands of European men came to Central Otago for the gold rush. They formed the Earnscleugh Grand Junction Mining Company and extracted gold from their claim between the Clutha River and farmland in the Earnscleugh Valley. Water was vital to the recovery of gold from the gravel so Thomas Oliver and Joseph Knowles also invested in water. They cut water races from the Fraser River through Earnscleugh Valley channelling the water into the claims of other miners. During the 1900’s, the highly fertile farmland that was part of the three miners claim was planted in asparagus and then apple trees. Grapevines were first planted in 2000. The vineyard is named after these men who made their mark on the Earnscleugh landscape more than a century ago. Our Three Miners wines are available to try and buy at our Cellar Door within the Hilton Resort and Spa, Queenstown. We also have a small menu and all wines by the glass.

The Three Miners cellar door is located in a lovely bar inside the Queenstown Hilton Resort and Spa in Kelvin Heights. It is just a short and inexpensive water taxi ride across the lake from the Queenstown wharf so you get to experience the lake as a bonus. The wines were fabulous and the charming wine maker Ngarita was on hand to ask all our questions and talk us through the tasting. It is a great way to taste excellent wines from Three Miners located in the Alexandra region and some other wineries local to that area, a bonus if you don’t have time to visit in person. Don’t miss this if you are a wine lover.

I saw the reviews for Chard farm, yesterday, the day before we were leaving Queenstown. So, quickly made a call to find out if they were open, it being Easter Monday. This was the best wine tasting I’ve ever experienced. Pauline, our host, was a hoot! She was so funny and she knew her wines. The views on our way there, were so beautiful. Well worth the 1.5km unsealed road, to get there. 10 out of 10!
