The 10 Best Wineries & Vineyards in Canterbury Region, South Island

September 9, 2021 Russell Mellin

Christchurch, the Garden City, and the Canterbury region are the perfect destination for daredevils. From northern Kaikoura to Waimate in the south, Canterbury is an adventure sports paradise. Hangliding, helibiking, bungee jumping, snowboarding, jetboating, rafting and skydiving get the adrenaline going. Golfing, flightseeing, swimming with dolphins and soaking in thermal pools are more laid-back temptations. Christchurch, a city of parks and gardens, is the country’s third largest urban area.

Mt Beautiful Winery Tasting Room

The Mt. Beautiful Tasting Room is adjacent to the Two Rivers Cafe located in central Cheviot, and features a beautifully renovated, light and airy space that preserves historic aspects of its original structure, while incorporating indigenous materials and other elements from the Mt. Beautiful vineyard estate. A long, clean concrete slab counter runs North to South with a walkthrough gap in the middle representing the iconic “Chasm” that runs through the vineyard, separating it into Northern and Southern sections. Guests may choose to stand for a tasting at the counter, or take a seat at one of the many beautiful and locally-crafted macrocarpa or oak tables featuring wood milled from trees grown on the vineyard. Individual tastes of wine are available, but guests are encouraged to experience the breadth of Mt. Popped in here for a quick wine tasting and ended up staying an hour. My husband isn't a "wineie" so kept me company with a gorgeous coffee. Bough a bottle of the pinit and chardonnay, should have bought the rose too, it was delicious. The name does not disappoint, beautiful place and beautiful wine!

We turned up unannounced with a party of 8 and asked for a tasting. James and Mary were incredible. James did the tasting and it was the best tasting all of us had ever done (including tastings in France, NZ, England, Spain and Argentina). Really good fun, James was very knowledgable and great craic during the tasting. Mary was very friendly and helpful when we were buying the wine. What can I say apart from we would definitely go back and will definitely be buying some wine from the website when we finish what we bought!

We were a group of 12 doing the Alps to Ocean Cycle Trail. This is a MUST stop. Do not judge a book by the outside. The inside of this place is superb. Very welcoming (yes they even welcomed cyclists in cycle gear!), knowledgeable, engaging and we would have stayed for hours. The wine was good too ha ha. The food looked great and wish we hadn't stopped at the crappy cafe in Kurow 10 minutes before. Although the reason we did as most places we had come across in Twizel/Ohau were closed due to lack of staff and we didn't want to take the risk! I suggest you take this risk. It is NOT on the Cycle Path so if you see a building with WINERY on it, then head that direction down the highway about 100m. Thanks guys for your hospitality and good luck with the venture. Frank at Tokarahi Huts wants to stock your wine so hopefully he has been in touch!

It's been some years since we visited any of the North Canterbury wineries and weren't sure what to expect when we booked for a wine tasting and lunch here - and I have to say we were mightily impressed. A rustic building in an attractive setting with beautiful gardens added to excellent wines and a quite superb lunch sitting in the sun. The food was a genuine surprise; an interesting menu with quality fresh ingredients superbly cooked and beautifully presented. We enjoyed our dishes of fish, duck breast and wagyu beed plus some lovely desserts. Clearly a quality chef in the kitchen. And our server, a pleasant, professional and friendly lad from Canada was another plus. A great experience all round. Highly recommended.
