The 10 Best Walking Tours in Nice, Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur

April 2, 2022 Augustus Redeker

The deep blue waters of the Cote d’Azur are the dramatic backdrop for elegant Nice. Breathe in the fresh Mediterranean air as you stroll the waterfront promenade, or get an eagle eye of the whole city from atop Castle Hill. The pedestrians-only Place Rossetti is the heart of the city, with a grand fountain, vibrant buildings, and the beautiful Sainte-Réparate cathedral giving it a provincial French feel.

We took this tour in late December. I don't remember the driver/tour guide's name (sorry) but he was easy to talk to, gave us a lot of information. We started at the winery and met the winemaker George. George spoke only French so our tour guide helped translate but towards the end we were all able to converse a little. It was very cool to see how he ages the wine in the sun. We learned about his wine making process and then tasted several of his wines plus his olives. We bought some bottles to drink back at Nice and I wish we had bought more. The winery is full of beautiful paintings done by the winemaker's brother, who also designs the labels. We then went to St Paul-de-Vence and toured the little village. Since it was Christmas time, the village was decorated and was really very pretty. I recommend this tour if you have any interest in wine (and even if you don't because you might after this tour!). We were a family with 4 young adults, only one was a teen (I had to choose a category) to submit this review.

On this tour, led by a Medieval Historian, we will visit the Grand Synagogue, the underground areas of the medieval Jewish ghetto, the Jewish Cemetery, the Mur des Justes and other sites. We will also discuss many of the causes of anti-semitism which arose during the middle ages. If there is time, we can visit the Hotel Excelsior and/or the Ashkenazi synagogue, Ezrat A’him. We did an online wine tasting and it was a real pity we couldn’t have a physical one. It was amazing. Yuliya helped to buy and select wine for tasting, she gave a lot of information about how to taste wine, what to look for and how to navigate this complicated French wine landscape. I would definitely love to do this again in real life!

In this tour, you’ll discovery the ever-unpredictable history of Nice, a city, by its outer appearance has no or very little equivalent in the rest of France. First off let’s start with Ivette, our guide. She sealed the five stars with her calm reassurance, attentiveness, and low key management whilst at the same time being a lovely and interesting companion for the day. The organisation is great, from Gustav’s initial communication to his greeting in the shop and even the arrangement with the patisserie around the corner is far from what your initial cynicism suspects (or is that just me?). The cycling there was fairly hard going, even with the power assistance, although the 30+ heat did have a bearing on that. Stating the obvious, coming down is a lot easier.....and exhilarating. The tour around the vineyard is informative and informal and makes you fully appreciate why you pay a premium for a quality wine. That said, the four varieties produced at the winery are reasonably priced and hopefully taste as good back home as they did while eating lunch and fresh figs from the tree (once Ivette showed me where they were). A memorable day that I would thoroughly recommend to anyone capable of riding a bike.

We did the free walking tour in Nice with a small group of just 5 people. Although our guide isn’t originally from the area, we was really knowledgable. He took us to some beautiful stops and also climbed with us all the way to the mountain top to present us a breathtaking view over the French Riviera. I highly recommend this tour. Thanks again!

Ben’s customer’s service is outstanding! He speaks fluent English. We went to a lot of “must see” places and he brought us to the wonderful panoramic views of the city. He was also very accommodating to take our photos as requested. He gave us all cold and thirst quenching water which was a life-saver on this hot summer day. He gave us ample time to tour around, although the time in Monaco was a bit too tight since we had our lunch there & 1 hour is not enough for everything, oh well, the restaurant took a long time to prepare my food & so I ran out of time to buy souvenirs. Lesson of the story is — just order a quick & simple food on the menu. Otherwise, everything went smoothly, the whole group was actually in sync with each other although we all just met, we even had a singing time while traveling, yes, we all got along so well!!! Ben, was singing at some point, too— we all had a good laugh— no boring moments & it made the day more fun, enjoyable & memorable.
