The 10 Best Walking Tours in Island of Malta, Malta

September 17, 2021 Timmy Ribble

One of the three principal islands of the Maltese archipelago, the island of Malta is the largest of the chain. Its capital Valletta, a lively, bustling city with many buildings dating back to the 16th century, teems with cathedrals, palaces and forts. The impressive Grand Harbour offers a dramatic arrival. The top archaeological attraction is the UNESCO-designated Hypogeum temple ruins, a macabre, 5400-square-foot underground necropolis and the world's only underground prehistoric temple.

Regardless who you are, if you're going to Malta, you have not experienced fully without this guided tour of Valletta. In one day I did first the Valletta tour and then the Mdina tour with Matthew as a guide and I could not have been more satisfied. The way Matthew tells the stories of the city, reflecting on the leadership of the various knights of S:t Johns order and the strategic location of the city up until more recent times, makes you want to start studying history yourself. Even more, a real historian true to his form, Matthew skilfully relates the more contentious topics of the history and politics of the region's last millennium or so, but with objectivity, so that you yourself learn the different points of view and get a deeper understanding of what has formed Malta as she is today. To summarize - don't come to Malta without taking this tour.

Across the Grand Harbour, to the south of Valletta, is the historical fortified town of Vittoriosa, easily reached by means of a ferry boat. Many historians refer to the area as the cradle of Maltese history offering shelter to who ever took over the Maltese Islands. If ever there was a town which has escaped the ravages of development and succeeded in keeping its original character, Vittoriosa is the place.  Pretty and quaint alleys will not fail to delight you as you walk through the old town where the knights first settled when they came to Malta in 1530. The historic centre is characterised by winding streets, replete with buildings erected by the knights shortly after their arrival. Of particular beauty and historic value are the town's intact Auberge de France and Auberge of England. Vittoriosa is also a harbour-town, its city walls offer spectacular views of the Grand Harbour as well as of Valletta.

Inclusions: 2 hour guided tour with a fully licensed Tourist Guide.

Exclusions: Any entrance fee to any church or museum., Ferry boat

Walking through the streets of Valleta and realising the city has such a rich history. My tour guide was great and provided a lot of context as we passed each street. I've been on many walking tours and have realised the tour is just as good as your tour guide - luckily for me, my tour guide was amazing making it such a rich experience. Highly recommend the Valetta city tour!

Best experience for those who enjoy ghost stories, violent true stories and Mdina's medieval history. We will be going in depth in Mdina, but we will also be going around other famous landmarks in Rabat in the privacy of a private car. There is some walking involved since Mdina is only accessible by foot. I will also be explaining the history of Malta along the way whilst still visiting some of the most famous landmarks in Mdina and its surrounding areas! I will give you time in each location to admire their beauty, take a few photos, ask your questions and take a stroll around. Mdina is one of the must see places in Malta and you will see hands on why its called the silent city. An experience not to be missed!

I had the privilege of having Matthew as a guide when I visited Mdina yesterday, and it was an amazing experience. Matthew's deep expertise in the subject of history in general and Malta in particular, made it an unforgettable experience. In addition to telling everything worth knowing about Mdina, Matthew also excitedly answered all questions I had and revealed his deep knowledge on anything from ~2800 BC until more recent times, as well as even explaining the traces of mini elephants and their origins and how they may have ended up on Malta in pre-historic times.
