I was very much wanting to visit the fortified churches of Transylvania and found this tour on TripAdvisor. The day started in Cluj @ 8:30am and my guide, Adrian, picked me up and the journey began with some interesting history of the city...much appreciated. He is quite the knowledgeable guy so feel free to ask him anything about the culture and storied past of Romania. As we drive into the countryside my guide asked some questions about what I enjoyed, or was looking to enjoy from my trip to his country. Based on what I told him, he was able to modify the tour somewhat to accommodate what I really liked: hiking, natural beauty...as well as the history of the area. With the time we had, Adrian was able to squeeze in a quick stop to view the Turda Gorge AND a short hike up to an old castle ruin. Again, much appreciated. Lunch is included with this tour and we stopped at a restaurant inside the fortress at Alba Iulia. A very unique experience. The tour concluded with a nice visit to the fortified church in the village of Biertan. Such an amazing place. I would highly recommend this tour. My guide knew the area very well, spoke perfect English and German, and the experience really helped make my trip to Romania complete.

This is a walking tour designed for a unique and memorable experience, where you will see the beautiful sights of Cluj Ethnographic Park and discover nature in Hoia Haunted Forest. The National Ethnographic Park in Cluj-Napoca is the first open-air museum in Romania founded in 1929. The first sector contains peasant technical installations and workshops, the second sector contains traditional peasant farmsteads representative for distinctive ethnographical areas in Transylvania. The exhibited buildings are among the oldest and most valuable monuments of architecture in the Romania’s ethnographical heritage. The Hoia Forest is probably the world’s most haunted forest having a reputation for intense paranormal activity and unexplained events. Specialists from around the world are fascinated by the forest and spent time studying it’s mysteries. George is very knowledgeable and has obviously been to the places on this Transylvania trip. Customized our locations to maximize sights and touring for the time we had and where we wanted to see. Definitely a perfect trip that could have only used a couple tweaks. Watch windy roads if anyone gets car sick, let the driver know if there is anything specific your interested in and take lots of pictures, it will be a trip of a lifetime. Also, expect the guide to sometimes be rushed, we didn't expect to be kind of dropped off quite as much in some locations but we adapted to the area. Some of the best sights you will see and George is a very insightful and knowledgeable guide.

10. ArtCrawl

Universitatea Sapientia, Strada Matei Corvin 4, Cluj-Napoca 400000, Romania Helga Thies

Cluj has a bustling contemporary art scene and great works are hidden among the narrow streets of the city. That’s the thing, though – they are quite hidden. Certain places can be difficult to find in a city you’re visiting, information is not always available in English or up to date. The tour can take us to exhibitions, performances, studios & other events like fairs, movie screenings, workshops, usually in alternative, unconventional spaces. ArtCrawl is a personalised tour, available by booking, that encourages out-of-towners to discover the diverse local contemporary art scene; a guide to the exhibition spaces, as well as the art - sharing knowledge about the art and artists is also a part of the crawl. After booking a crawl and sharing your interests and curiosities, I will organise a walking tour through exhibitions, performances and other cultural events of the independent art scene. Studio visits can also be arranged. Get in touch to set a convenient time for the tour.
