In Zipaquirá, 50 kilometers coming out from the northside of Bogotá, is the largest salt mine in Colombia. Although the mines date back to the time of the Muiscas, primitive inhabitants of the region have been intensively exploited, they continue to have enormous reserves. In the heart of the mountain, an underground salt cathedral was dug, in what constitutes a monumental work of engineering, architecture, and design. This tour was a great surprise in our short time spent in Colombia. Although we had to rush to get to the airport right after the tour, the company did everything to help us and the driver dropped us off at the airport with no extra cost. Our driver, Alex, drove very safely and was very friendly and polite. Our guide, Jhon Fredy, was simply the best guide we ever had in all of our travels! He knew everything about the places we went, was very friendly with everyone, and made us feel very comfortable the whole time. It was clear that they weren't there just for the money - they really care about their customers. It really exceeded our expectations!

After we meet at 6:30 am, we'll go towards the natural park Chicaque through the south of Bogota, the town of Soacha and getting to the San Antonio town rural area where the park is located. We'll start stretching and warming up to hike a downhill of 2 km throug, where we'll witness abundant species of vegetation, birds, insects, rodents, etc; then we'll get the Rock Pick with a marvelous landscape view. Then we'll get to the restaurant-lodge at the bottom of the park for a small break. We will continue to the beautiful waterfall of high altitude coming from the mountains. Later on, travelers have the option to pay for a typical lunch back in the restaurant-lodge. Finally we will come back to the the park's entrance, hiking upwards on the mountain which is the most demanding as well as rewarding part of the tour; however, you will always find the option to take a jeep for an extra charge you'll have to pay in the lodge. We will end our tour in the starting point (El Dorado Plaza).

Andres was knowledgeable, friendly and courteous throughout the entire trip. Our long drive to the Sumpaz paramos went by quickly with our back and forth conversation. Andres speaks better English than I do! haha the started the hike at a very friendly farmers home with arepas and a hot drink. Then we began to hike up into the Sumapaz. Now I am out of shape due to the lockdown, but would hike often before the pandemic. This was a very difficult hike but not because of the terrain but due to altitude. Andres was very patient, but I promise you once you reach the view where you see the wetlands and lakes, it will all be worth it. I can't wait to visit as many paramos as I can during future visits. Any paramo in the Bogota region, I will only use the Andes Ecotour tour company. A few tips: wear hiking shoes, bring a raincoat the weather can change suddenly throughout the day, bring a hat that can protect your face and neck. You are about 13,000 ft above sea level, the sun is very strong at that level so be sure to protect yourself. Also, bring water!
