Oyasukyo Daifunto

I have never seen anything quite like this; a steaming hot river cutting through a gorge, complete with steam vents shooting out of the cracks. Oyasukyo has a short and lovely hike down into the gorge. There are many onsens to soak in afterwards. I highly recommend Doroyu Onsen (however it is a little bit out of the way).
The gorge is beautiful in spring and summer but I recommend visiting in autumn as the gorge has many colorful trees. Do not recommend visiting in winter: the hiking path is closed due to heaps of snow. However, the onsen are still open.
There is a bus that takes you directly there from the Yuzawa bus station.

We stopped here after going to oyasukyo, and it was so beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice, it looks otherworldly. There are a lot of steps, but not unreasonable. There is a waterfall all the way at the bottom. Definitely visit if you enjoy things in nature. We spent about 2 hours here.

Ryozeki Sake Brewery

Reviewed By DanL917 - Tokyo, Japan

Hard to visit sake Breweries if you are not part of a guided tour. I am not into sake but I hit this area as it was near my hotel in Yuzawa and I was finished traveling for the day. The lady at the front summoned her daughter or niece who was in junior high, and she spoke a bit of English and showed me around. The building for the brewery itself is original, but modernized on the inside with steel tanks to hold the sake. There are four kura buildings housed inside which are still used to store sake in various stages. The exterior of the brewery is very handsome and well maintained as the pics show. Inside there is a first class showroom replete with red carpet, where you can sample 5-6 bottles of sake. I wasn't aware of the quality of sake at this place until I saw their tourist brochure. Their sake has been winning international awards every year since 2008 or so, and one sake won double Gold as best sake at a competition in SF, California in 2014. Their sake is also sold a lot at gift shops and road stops in the Yuzawa area. Anyways the girl showing me around said many tour groups visit the place during the day. I was there at 4:30 PM so the place was pretty quiet.
I don't drink sake but their sake seemed pretty good. Didn't clear out your nostrils like some do. Yuzawa in Akita is pretty out of the way, below the more famous Yokote City (Ha!), so don't expect a lot of English support when you visit this place unless you are part of a JTB or Yokoso tour group.
