Three Gorges

Reviewed By eelSeattle - Seattle, WA

This attraction was an optional side excursion from our Yangtze River Cruise...for an extra fee. Although it was interesting, the Tribe of the Three Gorges was more akin to a nice nature walk and an opportunity to take a few outdoor shots. All the pre-printed colorful brochures promoted the venue as "the scenic spot" with facilities to accommodate large groups for dining, meetings and overnight lodging. Most everything about the attraction was staged for the benefit of visitors. Our guess is that they are trying to market it into an expensive tourist destination. Since most all of the wonderful villages along the Yangtze were destroyed by the flooding caused by the Three Gorges Dam, this "scenic spot" was created to try to replicate some of the wonderful history which was lost. Compared to what we experienced 30 years ago along the Yangtze, the Tribe of the Three Gorges paled and would have been worth a pass.

From the dam to the gorges to the pandas, this journey is a once in a lifetime. The ship is comfortable but not up to the standards of the bigger cruise ships. We were on the Goddess. It was fine. Beds are very hard. Got a bit ill feeling one day but was fine the next day. The Dam is a wonder. I woke up in the night with the sound of the boat being moved along the locks. Fascinating. The gorges were breathtaking. I could watch the scenery every day, very relaxing. The steps were good and the prize was viewing the pandas. We were on a Nexus Holiday tour. It was good. We are not used to taking tours but this was a good way to see China. Worth the ride.

An optional tour available from a Sinorama Yangtze River cruise is going through the Xiling Gorge Tribe of the Three Gorges Villlage in Yichang , Hubei province in China. The village is constructed along the river bank depicting early life and activities along the three gorges of the Yangtze river. Attractive and very friendly English speaking and local tour guides are available to provide commentary on the activities along the village. Along the tributary river from the Yangtze, there were fishing boats, bamboo rafts with costumed Chinese ladies, costumed men playing the flute among the drooping bamboo branches, fishing boats towing rafts with cormorants, women washing cloths the old way on the river banks, and there was even a wedding ceremony for a local bride and a groom chosen among the tourists. There are Chinese houses along the hillside and even pagodas on top of the hill. Overall, a fantastic attraction, and the village is the first stop along the Yangtze River cruise. If going on such a cruise, do not miss the opportunity to see this village attraction. The cost is very modest. A must see attraction on the Yangtze River.

The top of the cave has the Drum Beating Terrace and the pillar. This platform dates back to the Three Kingdoms Period (220-280) when general Zhang Fei of the Shu Kingdom, commanded his soldiers to these Mountains by the continuous beating of a drum. There is a huge stone carved statue of the general facing the voluminous Yangtze River. A little away from this Terrace is the Garden of Seals where different Chinese seals from different kingdoms are engraved on stone, colored and displayed for visitors.

The Xiling Gorge is one of the highlights of the three gorges cruise itinerary, but you'll pass through it fairly quickly and I'm not sure 3 days is needed for the couple of hours highlights that Xiling offers. If you're into cruising, I'm sure you'll love it. If you just want to see the gorge, arrange an excursion tour for a couple of hours. That's all you need. Just make sure you don't book a President Cruise, no matter what you decide.

Okay so we know it's all put on for visitors but during our visit we turned out to be the big attraction with the locals who never seemed to have seen a Western face. A distillery turned out the local hooch and offered deadly free samples, a school kids play had traditional Chinese music and more of the hooch, the scenery if stunning and lunch served in a local bar included tiny fried fish a little boy pulled out of the nearby stream in a bucket.

the pagoda is a beautiful landmark, you can see the old and the new (bridge and buildings) leaving side by side by the river.
the pagoda follows a very singular design in China, as not many pagodas keeper the FengShui style.
it is a simple building, well preserved, but as many attractions in China the heads of the statues are no longer there as per cultural revolution.
if you are at Yichang you should definitely pay a visit.
