Webb Deane Stevens Museum

Reviewed By kzsull01 - Windsor, United States

My husband and I visited the Webb-Deane-Stevens Museum in Wethersfield, Connecticut on Saturday, June 23, 2018. Our visit included a guided house tour of the Webb, Deane and Stevens houses. We arrived about ten minutes before 11:00 AM and we were able to start on our guided house tour at that time, which was rather nice. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable, interesting, informative and polite. She made the tour entertaining, providing an excellent lesson in history, which was quite educational. Our guided tour of the houses took a little over an hour and we were able to park for free in front of the museum at the time of our visit, which was very convenient. The tour of all three houses was very nicely done. All three houses were well restored, nicely preserved and maintained with beautiful period furnishings that were very elegant. The tour included interesting details about the families that lived in each of the houses, including their personal lives, careers, accomplishments and the way they lived their lives. The details included how the family members’ lives aligned to the timeframe of the major events that were happening in America and abroad. Details about the contents of each room of each of the houses and how each room was used were also provided. We started our tour in the Deane house, which had very impressive architecture. Many interesting details were provided on the role Silas Deane played in history, politics and trade, including his involvement in the events that led up to the American Revolution. The issues he faced and the unfair false allegations held against him regarding misappropriating Government funds and treason were also addressed, which were all quite unfortunate, since he was not able to resolve these issues during his lifetime. We then went to the Isaac Stevens house, which was smaller, but still rather unique. This house had nice woodwork, paneling and wallpaper. These features illustrated the middle class of the 1820s and 1830s and the growing availability of consumer goods and the period’s technologic advances following the Industrial Revolution. We ended the tour in the Joseph Webb house, where George Washington stayed in 1781 for five nights, having a conference which planned a joint military campaign with French Commander Conte de Rochambeau that led to the Victory at Yorktown and the end of the American Revolutionary War. The room where George Washington slept was well preserved, including the original wallpaper on the wall, which was quite impressive. The history of the house when Wallace Nutting purchased it around 1910, and the Colonial Revival period within the house during that time period, was quite interesting. This history explained the beautiful unique murals on the wall in the parlor which depicted the Victory at Yorktown, which was really quite impressive, especially because of its historical significance The outdoor grounds were well maintained. The Colonial Revival Garden was nicely designed, very well laid out with beautiful flowers in full bloom at the time of our visit. We recommend a visit to this museum for a comprehensive historical perspective of these three houses in Wethersfield. It was a very nice walk back through time. We hope that you have an opportunity to visit it as well.

Old Wethersfield

This beautiful part of town is a lovely place for a stroll or to simply sit and soak in the history of the town. There are plenty of colonial houses and quaint shops, and in the autumn there’s a scarecrow festival along Main St. There are also good restaurants and pleasant places to sit. This is a fantastic part of a lovely town, and a callback to times when people would actually come out and socialize.

Lara's Labyrinth

We had a group of 8 for a New Year’s Eve booking. It had been originally for 6 and we needed to add two additional people late. One of the owners (Jonah) helped us modify the reservation and we booked for 8pm in cell block 4. We had a variety of ages (teens to late 50s) all had some game experience. This room is jam packed with a great mix of puzzles Plenty for multiple groups to be working on simultaneously. The most experienced player in our group has done ~15 rooms. He said it was his favorite by far. Not even close to another room experience. If you have a large group and like to have a lot of different puzzles to be working on concurrently this is the room for you! Btw we had had mediocre experiences elsewhere that hinged not on the room but the game master. They are as important as the room and ours was great!

Lovely place for a relaxing day out. There’s a nice levelled trail to walk on with beautiful views of the water. They have many benches and picnic spots to enjoy the recent sunny weather. It’s also possible to social distance yourself and still have an enjoyable day.
