Tyneham was - deliberately - abandoned around 1942 when it was incorporated into the Lulworth firing ranges. It's now possible to visit the remains, which include a number of roofless cottages, the reconstructed schoolhouse and church and an early phone box. Each of the cottages has an interesting interpretation board, with old photographs of the former inhabitants, often dating as far back as the early 1900s. The school room is set out as it might have been in the inter-war period, with books on the shelves and, again, decent interpretation boards. The church has been reconsecrated, but is also used as the base from which to sell guides to the village and postcards. It also includes a timeline of the village's history from before its first settlement to its abandonment.
Access is down a narrow lane; at the bottom there's a large car park. Admission is completely free and largely unrestricted, although there's a very modest donation suggested for parking. There are toilets near the barn. the site closes before duck - check before you travel if it's open.
My principal reservation is that it's not accessible for people with mobility difficulties, although there's a danger that improving access could limit the authenticity of the remains..

Really fun.The monkeys are out most of the time.Would recommend going to see Paul the monkey as he is very lively & noisy.The shop is a bit cramped though.The toilets are clean and the talks are great especially the Lemur talk.Price was reasonable.

We often take house guests here, and usually go on afterwards to Moreton to see Lawrence's grave, Whistler's engraved windows in the church, the renowned Tea Rooms and the Walled Garden. Cloud's Hill always impresses: the guides are enthusiastic and knowledgeable (on this visit we learned that it was named after the nearby Claude's Hill) and the dwelling certainly encapsulates its late resident's eccentricity.

so glad ive found this lovely place so near to my 'stomping' ground: had Know idea it even exsisted so what a pleasant surprise: not just a nice Garden Centre but lovely Seating area both inside and outside, esp by the pond, then a wander around the actual garden area to walk into a 'mini Stone Henge' wild flower area: Even bought a large plant for a friend, which I cant pronounce but looks wonderful:)

Well I've been to Dorset a few times but never until now Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door.
What a beautiful place. The wife and I loved it and will be returning asap. I will walk the coastal path one day. We had beautiful weather for Oct as well, really relaxed place even though it was busy. Stunning views and we now have a picture of the Steps on our wall at home.

Just before you ride the Swanage Railway from Norden, visit this small museum and it will help put into perspective how the standard gauge line fitted in with the local Tramways used for moving ball clay. The recreation of a mine working is something else. By the use of video the ball clay mining process is brought to lfe.

Whilst staying in the area, we visited Wareham for the afternoon and did the Saxon Wall Walk. It's a nice walk, not quite encircling the town but offering good views and insight into local history, a lovely idea by the local council/authority and should be commended.

With a donation Tin. Lovely welcome from volunteers who are obviously pleased to tell you all about the town of Wareham.
This is a small museum - packed with information on archaeology, geology, Lawrence of Arabia.
Most interesting is the social history of Wareham as a port & market town - regarding the clay industrry & agricultural community.
Very good exhibits & photos. Fully accessible to wheelchairs

Lovely building in very well kept grounds, on arrival it was hard to tell wheter or not the church was open.
