A short drive from Walhalla and we were at Bruntons Bridge. This area has of recent times had an upgrade with more camp sites available and a clean and tidy toilet block. Very relaxing.

Walhalla is a historic gold mining town. The buildings are all authentic to the late 1800s era, though some are rebuilt in the style after being burnt down, as Walhalla has had many fires. There is abundant historic signage providing both narrative and photographs. The Post office museum is worth inspecting too, for the cost of a donation. The tramway walk above the town offers nice scenic views. Quite a few steps to get to it but it’s fairly flat once you get there and an easy walk. It’s also the beginning of the great alpine walking track that can be followed all the way to Canberra. The walk is as long as you want or as short as 400 metres between stepcases at either end of town. The fire station is unique as it’s built across a creek due to lack of flat ground in the valley. The Chinese gardens site is on the edge of town but nothing much to see as it’s now a camping ground. The walk up to the mountain top cricket ground is a bit steep and continues uphill for 1 km in a zig zag path . Wear sturdy shoes as the path gets very rocky. Take a bat and ball for a hit on the cricket pitch when you get there. Take water, camera, snack, and a hat. There is seating and information boards at intervals on the way up to the oval. Allow more than the 45 minutes return it says it takes unless you are very fit. The uphill is quite strenuous and you will want to spend time at the top as well as reading info boards . I would allow 1.5 hours to do it comfortably .

An authentic underground goldmine that is heritage listed. Tour groups of up to 30 people are escorted by an experienced guide. The Mine is well it, plenty of room and well ventilated. It is very safe. Tours operate daily except Christmas Day at 1:30pm - and at 12noon and 3pm on weekends, public holidays and school holidays.
We first visited this location in 2017. Returned in 2020 with my brother who is visiting us from sunny Sri Lanka. Walhalla is a great place to visit with lots of history. In short this is one of the townships which got electricity at the same time as Melbourne. But then it was the ghost town which got electricity as the last place in the same region. You would Wonder what does that means. Please visit and experience what happened.

The best view of Walhalla, you must do it. If you don't want to climb the steps, just park at the Long Tunnel Extended Mine (where the tours are) and walk onto it from there - it's flat, and that way you don't need to do the steps at all. Having said that, I have bad knees but I walked the steps near the rotunda at 6am to watch the new day dawn over Walhalla....there was no sunset due to the fog but it was just magical as there was no-one up yet, just the birds! We walked up near the rotunda, walked along to the viewpoint above where the museum/post office is and you can walk down those steps. Bring your camera! (or phone!)

This is the Old Walhalla Post Office Museum - this post seems to mix up both museums, the other one at the corner store was closed when we went, so this is my review of the Old Walhalla Post Office Museum. It was absolutely fascinating as the last post master who lived and worked here kept it as it was, so it has become a legitimate preserved time capsule and step back in time. It's only a "donation" to get in . I highly recommend you take the time to wander through, and the lady at the front was SO friendly and helpful

Spectacular year round, Baw Baw National Park covers a substantial part of the Baw Baw Plateau. As the snow melts see the hills come alive with vivid wildflower displays. Explore the wonderland of geological formations and walk or snowshoe one of the many trails that criss-cross through tangled snowgum forests. Walk a section of the Australian Alps Walking Track and discover Mushroom Rocks, a maze of giant granite tors rising from the forest. Head to Mount St Gwinear. Snowshoe, toboggan or cross-country ski one of the many trails that criss-cross the twisted snowgum forests. Walk the same trails in spring and see the Baw Baw Plateau come alive with a vivid display of wildflowers. Canoe or kayak down the pristine Thomson River.
The 5 hour return hike to My Erica summit is moderate in difficulty. In summer take your camera to capture the beautiful wildflowers, birds and ever changing landscape as you ascend. There is no view from the summit, because of the dense forest canopy, but the journey there is highly recommended and one you will treasure for its splendour and beauty.

Walhalla's cemetery is on a very steep hill which makes it very unusual. It was very sad to see how young most of the 1300 "inhabitants" were when they died. Keep an eye open for the "cursed" grave.

Amazing forest scenery, nice stroll that takes an hour or so. Small gradient down to the creek and them up again
