This hike is affectionally known as the pink pillbox hike. It’s on the west coast Oahu so it’s off the beaten path so-to-speak, but this hike and locale is amazing!! It’s a good hike, definitely not for the weak hearted since it’s high up and on a winding path that is narrow at points and offers no protection from sliding off the path. But you have to check it out, and I highly recommend going at sunset...the views are AMAZING! There are a few different pillboxes & artifacts from a war and a time past! Super cool spot!!

We live close by and this is our beach of choice on the Leeward side. Lifeguards are awesome, saved my brother's life one day. RESPECT the ocean at all times but esp here. Never turn your back to it! Gorgeous views, lots of local talented surfers!

Ka'ena Point State Park

At the very end of Mokuleia where the road dead-ends is Kaena Point State Park with its secluded sandy coves and huge wide-open spaces. The hiking trail follows a deeply rutted unpaved Jeep road with dozens of small seaward paths branching off to the ocean’s edge. If you opt to hike the full round-trip trek from Kaena Point to Yokohama Bay on the Leeward Coast, you’ll need roughly three hours, ample stamina, plenty of water, sunscreen, snacks, body cover and your camera.

It's a beautiful hike to the western tip of the island. Rather easy hike unless it rained one or two nights before. It is really hard to dotch all of the puddles on the path. Would not recommend this for older people or youngsters after rain. Take plenty of water with you. There are tide pools at the end. Wear/take bathing suit and definitely water shoes. No shade on the hike or by the tide pools. My favorite hike on Oahu.

This trail is approximately 2 miles long in its entirety. The trail is rugged with many rocks and lava stones along the way. It is also quite steep at points and would not be appropriate for anyone who is not fit for a moderate/strenuous hike. What is particularly interesting about this hike is that at the top are "pill boxes," lookouts from World War II as well as remnants of a winch, cables, and pipelines. The pill boxes are still intact enough that you can go inside and see the same views that the WW II soldiers saw while watching for an attack by the Japanese. The vistas are spectacular and well worth the climb.

The breakwater makes family swimming safe. It is also near the Army Rec center beach which offers good beginner surfing most of the time. Get there early to see the dolphins when they come by. Snorkel to see the turtles.

As many have noted, be sure to wear rubber-sole water shoes, bring a ladder to get in and out of the cave and check tide reports to be sure you are visiting during low tide. We had a strong swimming man die rescuing a young child just a month ago near this cave. Otherwise, it is a stunning natural wonder anyone living or visiting ought to see at least once. The photos I’m sharing are true color, no filter.
