Dennison Depot Railroad Museum

small museum that highlights the movement of soldiers to their postings during the WWII years

Dennison was the site of a WWI Red Cross Canteen. You would never guess its historic significance looking at it. This is the only remaining depot located on a railway which provided a key link to the Strategic Corridor for National Defense going east-west. Played a vital role in the disbursement of troops during WWII. Do NOT miss the orientation film at the beginning. The tour is self guided. This is easily one of my favorite historic landmarks. DO NOT MISS!

Gnadenhutten Museum

After visiting Historic Schoenbrunn Village we drove to Gnadenhutten Historical Park & Museum. Before walking through the park watch the video in the Museum and see the exhibits of Indian life in Ohio to get a "feel" for the village depicted in the park. The park includes the mass grave of the 90 Christian Indians killed during the final months of the Revolutionary War. Enter the two log buildings (one is the meeting house and the othe a cabin) that commemorate the tragic massacre. Imagine that this village might have looked similar to Schoenbrunn when the missionaries and Christian Indians lived there. Now it stands silent as a reminder of this tragedy.

The Warther Museum is home of the world famous woodcarvings of steam engines by Ernest Mooney Warther carved out of ivory, ebony, and walnut. Mrs. Warther's button collection numbers over 73,000 buttons in patterns, and her Swiss style gardens still bloom seasonally to this day. The Warther Museum is more than you can imagine as you see what two people created in just one lifetime.

We aren't into trains, so we couldn't appreciate as deeply as some other folks, but if you can step back, after viewing all the carvings, and look at the exhibit as a whole, you quickly realize this is a spectacular display of genius. Several of the people on our tour said they visited more than once, or plan to come back again. Although this is not the case for us, this shows that human artistry can still outdo machines. As for the site itself, it's easy to find and there's plenty of parking. We found it a little expensive, but we certainly understand why. Using AAA helped, I think we got either 50 cents or $1 off admission.

South Fork Marina Boat Rentals

Reviewed By MyOpEd - Canton, Ohio

Our experience was limited to a half-day pontoon boat rental on a weekday. I checked prices at another local lake which were nearly 2x as much so we opted for South Fork at Leesville Lake. $125 for five hours (8 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. or 1:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.) plus reasonable gas charges. Customer service was friendly and helpful, from the initial phone call to check in to check out. The pontoon boat was new, clean, and in excellent condition. Gentleman at dock was very helpful in reviewing safety gear and mechanics and getting us on our way. Although we did not have much fishing success, we thoroughly enjoyed our time on the water and cannot wait for another opportunity to visit. There is wheelchair access to the store but maneuvering the docks would be very difficult. There were limited snacks at the store. Restrooms were camp-esque type facilities close to the store.

Zoar Village State Memorial

Founded as a communal group by 19th-century religious dissenters, Zoar has been partially restored as the Zoar Village State Memorial. Other buildings are private residences, shops, restaurants and inns.

If you like history, old buildings, and artifacts, you'll love this place. There are plenty of artifacts to look at, pictures, tools, clothing, materials, etc. Everything is very well kept and in great condition. Pains were taken to restore buildings to what they once were. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable.

Only reason it wasn't a 5 is because several of the buildings were not open, but there wasn't a reduction in pricing.

We crossed paths with a family with several kids several times, and even their kids seemed to enjoy looking - of course, it's a look don't touch policy.

Historic Schoenbrunn Village

Reviewed By Sightsee_Eat - Worthington, Ohio

These are not original buildings like at Zoar, but built on original foundations based on historical research in the 1920s and supplemented with recent archaeology. Schoenbrunn (meaning Beautiful Spring in German) was a Moravian mission town that was the first white settlement in Ohio in 1772. The Village was disbanded in 1977 because of the Revolutionary War. We had visited Zoar the day before and stopped for the night in New Philly at the nice, new, inexpensive Holiday Inn Express. We came to Schoenbrunn for just a little bit in the morning at opening at 9:30 before leaving for Coshocton and Roscoe Village. The trek around the village is in the grass, so take appropriate shoes if it's wet. There's a 10-minute video to begin and a little museum to visit in the Visitor's Center.

We have seen the sign for the last few years and had the time to stop recently. We went during the week and we're the only guest. Owner was very friendly, but we felt rusted thru our wine tasting and did not get to select the variety we wanted past the first glass. Wine is on the higher end for the area. The My merlot and white merlot were unique.
There is a new porch outside with a good view. I would suggest you go on weekends or Fri when there is more activity offered if you are looking for atmosphere.
