Ubon Ratchathani (Thai: อุบลราชธานี, pronounced [ʔubon râːt.tɕʰa.tʰaːniː]) is one of the four major cities of Isan (Khorat/Nakhon Ratchasima, Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, and Khon Kaen), also known as the "big four of Isan". The city is on the Mun River in the south-east of the Isan region of Thailand. It is known as Ubon (อุบลฯ) for short. The name means "royal lotus city". The provincial seal features a pond with a lotus flower and leaves in a circular frame. Ubon was the administrative centre of Ubon Ratchathani Province. As of 2006, the Ubon urban area had a population of about 200,000. This included 85,000 in Thetsaban Nakhon Ubon Ratchathani (Ubon municipality), 30,000 each in Thetsaban Mueang Warin Chamrap (Warin municipality) and Thetsaban Tambon Kham Yai, 24,000 in Thetsaban Tambon Saen Suk, 10,000 in each of Thetsaban Tambon Pathum and Tambon Kham Nam Saep, and 6,000 in Thetsaban Tambon Ubon.

We found the complex’s geometric layout, incorporated Thai designs and the well-maintained grounds all definite reasons to visit. Our recognition and respect to the local supporters and patrons of this wat. We spent easily over an hour walking all parts of the complex site.

This is not a tourist place directly .But it is a place to practice Dharma. Please compile, respect and follow the rules. Very peaceful and relaxing place with big trees.

Great zoo. Can drive through in big open bus or hire small golf carts. Can get up close to deer.No elephants !!! There is a show put on there which is great. Toucans fly overhead from one trainer to the next.Spectacular.Variety of other animals do tricks. Worth having a look at if in Ubon. Out of town but taxi very cheap

Terrific temple! My first visit was part of a school group led by other teachers. Little did I know what a marvellous site this was as I guided the students onto the bus. We were awe-struck firstly by the elephants (you'll see what I mean) and then by the suspended boat temple and tower. Selfies and photos galore as we did a few laps. The other boat temple is a ripper...perched neatly on the water with a bush backdrop to match! Our group also ventured inside the large hall next to the front boat near the entrance. Stunning paintings and décor surrounding the central golden Buddha statue. Truly a hidden gem of a place!

One annual festival which definitely showcase the skills of Thai artists is the Candle Festival, held in Ubon Ratchathani, in the Northeastern part of Thailand. The main event is the Candle possession which takes place on the full moon of July which marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent. You will see huge pieces of sculpture carved out of beeswax candles, decorated with Thai elements and often depicting characters from Thai and Hindu myths and folklores. There is usually a competition and exhibition for these candle sculptures and artists from all over the world come to Thailand to participate. It is a beautiful event that visitors should not miss.
