Clare Coastal Walk Project

Reviewed By jf002

If you can walk, this is the way to see the Cliffs of Moher. Park your car (or get a ride) to the parking area by O'connors Pub in Doolin. Walk back across the bridge, turning to your right and up the small road until you find the sign and gate for the coastal walk. 6 kilometers of easy hiking (unless there has been a big rain) with very few people in sight. Gorgeous views which become even more spectacular as the cliffs rise in front of you. When you get to the area of the visitors center and parking, you will be astounded by the masses of humanity who climb off their day-bus trips and see such a small part of this beautiful area. Walk down to the carpark and take the Paddy Wagon shuttle back to your car. Be sure to check shuttle times before you go so that you aren't waiting around the car park too long. - they only run every hour or two.

We went for the caves, which were great, but this was the but we will remember. Great displays and kids got to have birds land and take off from their gloved arm. The birds buzz you ( feathers brushed my head!) as they come into land. Adults and kids alike loved it.

Unfortunately the weather was not overly cooperative, so our group could not spend as much time as we wanted in this area with most of our visit on wheels. It was enough for us to see and appreciate the unique characteristics of this area which feels like you've just left Earth and walked onto a set of Mars or the Moon. The ruggedness of the area is both fascinating and beautiful at the same time. I only wish it had not been quite as rainy so we could have explored this area more.

The tour of Doolin cave was great. Very informative guide who showed us everything in the cave so we were not left wondering what things in the cave were. The highlight of the tour was obviously the stalactite which we were amazed at. Really wish we could see it for the first time again. Its huge the pictures don't do it justice. The tour is about an hour and you get a hard hat at the beginning of the tour as its quite low in some parts. Great for something to do if you're out in the area or visiting the Cliffs of Moher.

Fanore Beach

Beautiful sandy beach on the Wild Atlantic Way with interesting rocks coming straight off the Burren. The Atlantic is freezing cold even in summer but the sand gently slopes and the waves are good for Surfing or swimming. The sand area increases significantly at low tide, exposing neighbouring sandy beach coves. The beach faces west so the afternoon and evening sun is stunning.

We took a tour from Galway to visit the Burren and the Cliffs of Moher.
It was interesting to see this area as it is totally different from the area surrounding with its limestone versus green fields.
We stopped at a few ancient tombs along the way.

Great tour. Well worth a visit. We were day on a wet & cold day. But this had added benefits..1) the cave constantly & naturally stays at 10° so it wasn't cold & 2) because it was raining it feed through to the waterfall in the cave. Well worth a visit. Bear bones not there at present as being Carbon dated. We were with our 9yr old & she was full of questions which tour guide graciously answered. Also visit Farm shop, amazing fudge & cheese. There is free samples but well worth buying.

Caherconnell Stone Fort

Caherconnell Stone Fort, situated 1km south of Poulnabrone dolmen in the heart of the Burren Ireland , offers you the opportunity to visit an exceptionally well - preserved example of the stone forts or stone ringforts which are to be found in the Burren Ireland. The fort is in its original state. Its position, overlooking virtually all-surrounding areas suggests a defensive settlement. Archaeological excavations take place each summer in association with 'CAFS' - Caherconnell Archaeological Field School- an International Field School accredited by NUI, Galway. As well as a trip to the Fort, visitors can also take in the Burren's Premier Sheepdog Demonstrations at Caherconnell, enjoying the combined skills of the farmer and the border collie as they work in the natural habitat of the Burren.

Father Ted's House

Reviewed By Jennie S - Kenmare, Kerry, Ireland

My husband and i have wanted to visit father Ted's house for a while and were delighted to get the opportunity. We were greeted by a very enthusiastic lady, who was warm and welcoming. The tea and cakes were both plentiful and delicious. The stories that the owner told about the house and his connections with the father Ted series were both interesting and funny. There was a box of masks and props for people to use but this wasn't forced or pushed upon anyone which meant even some of the shyer of us had a go!! Lovely atmosphere, great house and fabulous people and at 10 euro a head it's great value, thanks for a brilliant time, i'd highly recommend going!
