The 10 Best Things to do in Terlingua, Texas (TX)

December 24, 2021 Mollie Coke

Terlingua (/tərˈlɪŋɡwə/ tər-LING-gwa) is a mining district and census-designated place (CDP) in southwestern Brewster County, Texas, United States. It is located near the Rio Grande and the villages of Lajitas and Study Butte, Texas, as well as the Mexican village of Santa Elena. The discovery of cinnabar, from which the metal mercury is extracted, in the mid-1880s brought miners to the area, creating a city of 2,000 people. The only remnants of the mining days are a ghost town of the Howard Perry-owned Chisos Mining Company and several nearby capped and abandoned mines, most notably the California Hill, the Rainbow, the 248, and the Study Butte mines. The mineral terlinguaite was first found in the vicinity of California Hill.

Get Lost Tours

I'm Chris, a guide of 20 years in Terlingua TX. During certain summers I've guided in places from West Virginia to Hawaii. I have studied, learned, and shared interp and experiences from all these places. I am WAFA (Wilderness Advanced First Aid) and CPR certified. I have enjoyed sharing and teaching about flora, fauna, geology, history, paleontology, and even my personal life. I enjoy learning from the many guests I have shared time with. I started Get Lost Tours because of this and much more.

There are a couple of other restaurants in Terlingua, but this is the only one worth going to. During the busy season you need to line up about a half hour before it opens at 5 or the wait will be hours. I ordered the mixed grill with the filet and it was wonderful. The quail was excellent. Te sausage was also pretty good. There was enough food on my plate for 2 people, and I felt like I had another person on my shoulders the next morning when we went hiking the next day, but that may have something to do with the margaritas as well.
