Tepozteco

This is really a lovely hike. It is quite easy to get to the top using the normal route, but there are dozens of other trails, some of which hidden, once you get there to go behind the temple and up other Mountains. There will be no signs and few people so it might be easy to get a bit lost. Id recommend downloading the area on google maps on your phone so you can track your location. Keep in mind that the area suffered a big earthquake in August and September, so don't try to climb through narrow Canyons or anything like that. It is a bit

Mercado Artesanal de Tepoztlan

Come on a Sunday after 11am for one of the largest markets around Mexico City. Street after street is covered with tianguis. The selection of souvenirs is vast and inexpensive. There are many great restaurants around the Zocalo and plenty of clean WC if you need a bathroom. I recommend parking in one of the pay lots and walking a few blocks down into the center of town. Don't try to drive to the Zocalo.

If you are going to Tepoztlan on a Sunday for the Tianguis, this is a worthwhile stop. Just off the Zocalo, so no extra driving is necessary. When you enter the grounds the entrance to the Convent is the doors to the left of the sanctuary. Check out the beautiful wall designs downstairs, but make sure you go upstairs to see the view! There is a very nice gift shop downstairs as well.

E-LTE told us they wanted us to feel l Ike we were out with friends for a day and they accomplished that and more! We went hiking and climbing with our 9 year old and 11 year olds kids. The team was incredibly professional, safety oriented, fun, and encouraging. When our little one was scared to rappel she was encouraged but not pushed and they found an alternative way down. We can't say enough about this great team. Thanks so much!!!

Although the steep hike to Tepozteco is temporarily closed due to the earthquake, there are other places in the area you can hike. Our friend, who is a local, took us hiking on the other side of the Tepozteco pyramid. The flowers, birds and other bits of nature were marvelous. It's probably best to hire a guide, though.

Tepozcuencos

Heaps of choices here - and sometimes you can guess, but you might want your Spanish dictionary to go through all of them, if you're picky.
I had a simple cone. The ice cream is quite different from what I'm used to - good, but a bit 'too' different (more grainy and with rather large 'chunks' in it - I had the Cappucino). So unlike others, I wouldn't say it's the best I've ever eaten. You could probably make a brunch or light lunch out of a lot of the 'exotic' special offerings with fruits, though.
The shop itself is quite charming - all bright and beckoning, though you know you're in Mexico when a giant cross is at the entrance, surrounded by colorful drawings and words related to ice cream!
It's straight across from the Cathedral/Museum (on the side street) so quite easy to find.

Given how shabby looking the centro is of this 'pueblo magico,' you're even more amazed and appreciative that this exceptional, and exceptionally designed, jewel exists. Be sure to go to it. There are so many great international cultural activities here on an ongoing basis.

Tepotzlan is an absolutely gorgeous village in a spectacular setting surrounded by Mountains. Once you have chosen your menu, Alexandra will take you to the market for the ingredients (that's an experience in itself!) and then show you step by step how to make the dishes. She is very patient and will explain even simple things like how to use a knife properly. She works with you so you never feel you are being lectured. In a way it's like cooking with your grandma who shows and encourages so that you learn. At the end you all sit down and enjoy the food you have cooked, and you can be sure it will be delicious!
Alexandra's focus is on healthy mexican cooking using fresh ingredients and some flavours you not have expected (like the avocado icecream!).
I can't recommend Chef Alexandra and her cooking classes highly enough, it's a wonderful experience to learn a new skill and maybe make a new friend.

The municipal palace, or town hall, of Tepoztlán on the zocalo. A fairly innocuous building, it has a variety of small exhibits on local history. For example, they currently have a display documenting the history of Emiliano Zapata Salazar.
