The 10 Best Things to Do in Taichung, Taiwan

July 21, 2017 Diedre Savory

Among its many tourist attractions, Taichung offers a downtown shopping experience similar to that of Tokyo or Manhattan, a bustling nightlife, and a cuisine to please even the pickiest palate. Travelers come to this city to feast their eyes on the temples, markets, parks, and museums. Touring families often visit the Taichung National Museum of Natural Science to marvel over the exhibits or the Feng Chia night market to purchase local goods. But perhaps what Taichung is known for the most is Bubble tea, the most famous beverage in the region.

It was winter but the place was already with budding cherry blossoms, plum and pear flowers in full bloom, alpine roses, falling red hot maple leaves. Snow atop the Snow mountain ridge. It was like four awesome seasons in one place all at the same time! Mandarin ducks, endemic species of small birds, swans and the endangered rare formosan landlocked salmons abound in their streams, Taoshan waterfall and garden area. Trekked through various nature trails and up to Snow mountain east peak and saw panoramic views of Mountains and Valleys. Above Syue Shan east peak, the beautiful black fir Forrest was enshrouded with white snow and the clear sunny Rays pierced the Forrest canopy into streaks of beautiful golden rays reflected in glittering blink off the snow blanket. Awesome place to be at anytime of the year. Different seasons bring about different colours and flowers in bloom. If u r a nature lover, it is a place not to be missed in Taiwan! 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan

At 01:47AM on September 21, 1999, the central part of Taiwan was struck by an earthquake that registered 7.3 on the Richter Scale. The resultant loss of life and damage to property put it among the worst natural disasters of the past century in Taiwan. In the wake of the 921 disaster, the local government decided to preserve some of the phenomena related to the earthquake such as slips in the fault line, collapsed school structures, raised river beds and other selected locations, to serve as reminders for the public of the need to prepare for such disasters and to be ready to provide emergency rescue services. With the rebuilding of Kwangfu Junior High on its present site, the Earthquake Memorial Museum was renamed the 921 Earthquake Museum of Taiwan on February 13, 2001. The new plan retains the original sites as a record of the damage wrought by the earthquake, and it also adds educational facilities designed to inform the public and school children about earthquakes and disaster readiness.

This museum is set on the grounds of a school that was damaged during the large 1999 earthquake that hit Taiwan.
It is quite informative about earthquakes in general and building technique to enable buildings to withstand earthquakes.
The damaged school and the running track (buckled up significantly) are preserved on the ground.
When we visited there were teams with rescue dogs going through the ruins.
It is located south of town, about a hour by bus (50) from the train station.

Kaomei Wetland

It would have been an excellent spot for photographing sunset but I went there on a cloudy and very windy afternoon in Feb., unfortunately. Having to battle the gusty winds along the seaside (maybe that was the reason for the large number of wind turbines located there), I managed to take some photos before retreating back to the tour bus. It would be better to visit the wetland in summer rather than in winter.

National Taichung Theater

Reviewed By Blue_Man_Alejandro - Singapore, Singapore

Spent a couple of hours at the National Taichung Theatre. It’s a beautiful place with unique architecture designed by a Japanese architect, Toyo Ito.
The theatre has a pretty facade and an enchanting sky garden on the roof top. In between, there are several floors of different exhibits some of which are rather “therapeutic“.
When we were there, there were little children singing in a choir which was pretty cute. I would say go for the architecture and exhibits and get your food and drinks else where as the VVG cafe/Restaurant at the Theatre would cost you and arm and a leg for very normal food.
Hope you enjoy the Theatre as much as we did.
