The Attic Theatre

The Attic Theatre is the No.1 fringe theatre in Stratford upon Avon and home to award-winning 'Tread the Boards' Theatre Company. In 2016 we begin the year with Romeo & Juliet, the only Shakespearean play being performed in Stratford during the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death. First established in 2009 by Tread the Boards, an award winning theatre Company. This unique, riverside theatre is located in the heart of Shakespeares' birth town. This unique space is housed in a Grade 2 listed 15th century building and seats just 89 people. This makes for a very personal and intimate theatrical experience.

This well-known Shakespearian comedy is great fun. Director John Robert Partridge has a really talented team here. Background music consists of appropriate Beetles songs. I have never heard such loud screaming, ever.
The singing was very good too.
We are regulars at this theatre and always love going there.

Royal Shakespeare Theatre

We create theatre at its best, made in Stratford-upon-Avon and shared around the world. We perform Shakespeare’s plays, as well as works by Shakespeare’s contemporaries and plays by today’s writers. We want as many people as possible to be able to access theatre at its best, so we bring our work to the widest possible audience.

I'm a 'Macbeth-o-phile', so when I saw it was on here, with no less than Christopher Ecclestone in the lead, I knew I had to come. I won't review the production here, other than to say that I would thoroughly recommend it.

However, it’s years since I’ve been to the RSC and I was pleasantly surprised on my return at just how nice it is. It was out of season, without hordes of schoolchildren, so perhaps that had an impact, but overall, I enjoyed the whole experience. The shop had a good range of related items, many reasonably priced; box office staff were helpful with a specific enquiry I had. We enjoyed a meal in the Rooftop bar, but felt that at £2.50 per visitor, the tower was a little expensive (how about a free daytime visit before 5pm, if you’re paying £££ for performance tickets?).
Don’t take a bulky bag with you, unless you don’t mind checking it in downstairs.
The only significant negative was that at the end of the performance, staff couldn’t wait to hustle me out of the door. I took a moment to text a friend to tell him the show had finished and arrange where we’d meet, and the staff basically shoo’d me on my way out of the auditorium. A shame, as everything else had been excellent.

Mary Arden's Farm

Mary Arden's Farm is closed for the winter and reopens 10 March 2018. The Farm was the childhood home of Shakespeare's mother. Today you can experience all the sights, sounds and smells of a working Tudor farm, just as it would have been when Shakespeare was a boy. Watch "Tudors" go about their daily routine, see rare breed animals and explore nature trails. There are daily falconry displays and archery at weekends and in school holidays. There is a playground for children from 2 upwards, a picnic area and a cafe. Mary Arden's Farm is a working farm that keeps pace with the season so there is always something new to see and do.The Farm is open seasonally from Easter to the end of October half-term.The Farm is 3 miles from the centre of Stratford-upon-Avon in the village of Wilmcote. There are buses and trains to Wilmcote. The train journey takes 5 minutes and the Farm is a short walk from Wilmcote rail station. It is also a pleasant walk along the canal from the centre of Stratford.

Situated on the outskirts of Stratford and part of the Shakespeare experience annual pass, Mary Arden’s Farm is an informative and wide- ranging experience perfect for those with younger children.
We visited during Halloween, when there were a range of additional activities available, but even without these there were a range of farm animals, knowledgeable ‘actors’ performing skilled activities in period costume, a range of buildings and outhouses and pleasant walks. It’s easy to spend a near full day here and not get bored. Only minor gripe is the rather costly and uninspiring cafe. By the time we visited in mid- afternoon there was next to nothing available and what was left was extortionate.

This wonderful theatre has an intimacy that puts it well above most others. It’s not large and at ground level the audience is really involved with the action. The nearby bar is cosy. It’s usually full so pre-booking is a prerequisite. No nearby parking so plan your visit. Wheelchair friendly. A Shakespeare lover’s delight.

River Avon Chain Ferry

Take a scenic ferry trip across the River Avon to the Waterside Gardens by the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and recreation grounds. In operation since 1937, and fully rebuilt in 2010 by Avon Boating, 'Malvolio' as it is named has ferried thousands of passengers back and forth over the River Avon. As one of the last remaining hand wound chain Ferries in the country you will get to see a unique angle of the river with views downriver to the Holy Trinity Church and upstream to the RST.

Reviewed By Howi58 - Liverpool, United Kingdom

This is a fun and leisurely way to cross the Avon. 50p is the cost for what is, admittedly, a very short trip. I did feel a little bit sorry for the poor driver who has to manually crank the chain mechanism for hour after hour!
